ADI and Ettus Research™ have collaborated to introduce cutting-edge technology using the AD9361, in the form of a fully integrated, single board, Universal Software Radio Peripheral platform. With continuous frequency coverage from 70 MHz to 6 GHz, the USRPTM B200 and USRP B210 are designed with a comprehensive C++ API, and supported by software frameworks with large developer communities such as GNU Radio. This software and the USRP B200 and B210 enable rapid prototyping with the AD9361.

The AES-ZSDR2-ADI-G SDR Evaluation Kit includes Avnet's ZedBoard and is tuned for highest RF performance in the 2400 – 2500 MHz region. This kit is ideal for the RF engineer seeking optimized system performance meeting AD9361 datasheet specifications in a defined range of RF spectrum.
The AES-ZSDR3-ADI-G SDR System Development Kit includes the Xilinx ZC706 development board and supports the AD9361’s full RF tuning range. This kit is ideal for the wireless communications system architect seeking a unified development platform which operates over a wide RF tuning range from 70 MHz – 6 GHz.
Both kits also include Xilinx Vivado® software, four Pulse 4G LTE blade antennas, and reference designs for Zynq-7000 All Programmable SoC running Linux.
Avnet has also released the fully-verified PicoZedSDR for software-defined radio incorporates the AD9361 integrated RF Agile Transceiver™ and the Zynq-7035 SoC for proven wideband RF performance on a 100mm x 62mm system on module.
The AD9361 is a high performance, highly integrated RF Agile Transceiver™. Its programmability and wideband capability make it ideal for a broad range of transceiver applications. The device combines an RF front end with a flexible mixed-signal baseband section and integrated frequency synthesizers, simplifying design-in by providing a configurable digital interface to a processor. The AD9361 operates in the 70 MHz to 6.0 GHz range, covering most licensed and unlicensed bands. Channel bandwidths from less than 200 kHz to 56 MHz are supported.
The AD9361 is packaged in a 10 mm × 10 mm, 144-ball chip scale package ball grid array (CSP_BGA).

This product has been released to the market. The data sheet contains all final specifications and operating conditions. For new designs, ADI recommends utilization of these products.
The AD-FMCOMMS3-EBZ provides software developers and system architect who want a single platform to operate over a wider tuning range than the AD-FMCOMMS2-EBZ. RF performance expectations of this board must be tempered with the very wide band front end. It does meet the datasheet specifications at 2.4 GHz, but does not over the entire RF tuning range that the board supports. Typical performance data for the entire range (70 MHz – 6 GHz) which is supported by the platform is published within the board documentation. This board is primarily intended for system investigation and bringing up various waveforms from a software team before custom hardware is complete. The objective being for designers to see waveforms, but not being concerned about the last 1dB or 1% EVM of performance. For performance-oriented platforms – please refer to the AD-FMCOMMS2-EBZ.
The AD-FMCOMMS2-EBZ provides RF engineers the ability to connect the AD9361 to a RF testbench (Vector Signal Analyzer, Signal generator, etc) and measure performance. The external components (which can easily be swapped) on the AD-FMCOMMS2-EBZ have a narrower RF tuning range 2400 – 2500 MHz. It is expected that most engineers will change these external components (pin for pin replacements from various vendors are available) for their specific application/frequency of interest. Anyone interested in a wider tuning range board should look at the AD-FMCOMMS3-EBZ.
