The ADuM1250 / ADuM1251 are hot swappable digital isolators with non-latching, bidirectional communication channels compatible with I2C interfaces. This eliminates the need for splitting I2C signals into separate transmit and receive signals for use with standalone optocouplers.

The ADuM1250 provides two bidirectional channels, supporting a complete isolated I2C interface. The ADuM1251 provides one bidirectional channel and one unidirectional channel for those applications where a bidirectional clock is not required.

Both the ADuM1250 and ADuM1251 contain hot swap circuitry to prevent glitching data when an unpowered card is inserted onto an active bus.

These isolators are based on iCoupler® chip scale transformer technology from Analog Devices, Inc. iCoupler is a magnetic isolation technology with functional, performance, size, and power consumption advantages as compared to optocouplers. With the ADuM1250 / ADuM1251, iCoupler channels can be integrated with semiconductor circuitry, which enables a complete isolated I2C interface to be implemented in a small form factor.

Product Detail

The EVAL-ADuM1250EBZ supports two bidirectional channels for evaluation of isolated I2C interfaces in 8-lead SOIC packages. The evaluation board provides a JEDEC standard, 8-lead SOIC_N pad layout. This layout supports signal distribution, loopback, and loads referenced to the VDDx or GNDx planes, as well as optimal bypass capacitance. Signal sources can be conducted to the board through header pins or through edge mounted Sub- miniature Version A (SMA) connectors (SMA connectors must be ordered separately).

Screw terminal blocks on the evaluation board provide power connections. The board includes 200 mil (5.08 mm) header positions for compatibility with active probes (probe header pins must be ordered separately). The EVAL-ADuM1250EBZ evaluation board can be used to evaluate the ADuM1250, ADuM1251, ADuM2250, and ADuM2251 devices. Although the pad layout on the EVAL- ADuM1250EBZ does not support the ADuM2250 and ADuM2251 16-lead SOIC_W and SOIC_IC packages, these devices are functionally equivalent to the ADuM1250 and ADuM1251, respectively, for the purposes of evaluation. They differ only by package and isolation capabilities. Therefore, evaluations of the ADuM1250 and ADuM1251 can be applied to the ADuM2250 and ADuM2251 as well.

The evaluation board follows best printed circuit board (PCB) design practices for 4-layer boards, including a full power and ground plane on each side of the isolation barrier. No other electromagnetic interference (EMI) or noise mitigation design features are included on this evaluation board. For high speed operation, or when ultralow emissions are required, refer to the AN-1109 Application Note for additional evaluation board layout techniques.

Full specifications for the ADuM1250 are available in the ADuM1250 data sheet, which must be consulted in conjunction with User Guide UG-1100 when working with the evaluation board.

The AD-FMCMOTCON2-EBZ is a complete high performance servo system on an FPGA Mezzanine Card (FMC) board, the purpose of which is to provide a complete motor drive system demonstrating efficient and high dynamic control of three phase PMSM and induction motors up to 48V and 20A.

Two motors can be driven at the same time, each motor having its separate power supply. The system incorporates high quality power sources; reliable power, control, and feedback signals isolation; accurate measurement of motor current & voltage signals; high speed interfaces for control signals to allow fast controller response; industrial Ethernet high speed interfaces; single ended Hall, differential Hall, encoder and resolver interfaces; digital position sensors interface; flexible control with a FPGA/SoC interface.

The kit consists of two boards: a controller board and a drive board. An optional AD-DYNO2-EBZ dynamometer can also be purchased through Avnet and is intended to be an extension of the drive system.

  • One BLDC motor acts as an electronically adjustable load and is driven by the embedded control system. This motor can be directly connected to the FMC motor drive to get complex / active loads. The load can be driven also by the AD-FMCMOTCON2-EBZ to implement dynamic load profiles.
  • The other BLDC motor is driven by the FMC motor drive.
