Precision D/A Converters

Precision digital-to-analog converters (DACs) are critical data conversion components for high-performance signal processing systems. Analog Devices has the industry’s largest portfolio of DACs covering 8 to 20 bits in resolution, best in class performance, smallest footprint, lowest power, and ease of use features. These features provide a simple design-in solution for the most challenging of biasing and control applications from component right through to signal chain level. A comprehensive suite of design-in support is available for all components from evaluation boards to LTSpice simulation.

ADI integrated solutions combine both the D/A converter and driver in one chip to provide the required output directly from the digital domain. Analog Devices’ portfolio of leading industrial D/A converters and drivers provides a range of programmable output ranges from standard 4 mA to 20 mA for current loop communication to ±10 V for actuator control. ADI industrial converters offer considerable control functionality and advanced on-chip diagnostics to maximize system uptime, as well as eliminate the need for costly calibration routines needed by some traditional discrete architectures. HART technology offers a complementary mode of communication to 4 mA to 20 mA that provides additional information in the form of remote diagnostics and system troubleshooting where it can be used to enhance the safety integrity level rating of a system. ADI offers a family of HART modems and 4 mA to 20 mA converters that can be used together to realize a robust, accurate, and HART Foundation registered solution. Our solutions address requirements for both loop and non-loop powered transmitters, and isolated and non-isolated analog I/O cards.

Analog Devices’ current source D/A converters (DACs) portfolio is ideal for photonics control applications where low current noise density, low dropout voltage, and high power efficiency, in addition to high channel density, is critical to system performance. The flexibility of the configurable current source D/A converter outputs, and 300 mA current delivery, make them suitable for resistive heaters and proportional solenoid drive.

Our current source DACs are suitable for many industrial applications, such as controlling temperature, light, and movement without derating over temperatures ranging from –30°C to +85°C. Products in this portfolio have been designed for autofocus, image stabilization, and optical zoom applications in camera phones, digital still cameras, and camcorders.

Analog Devices offers a wide range of high precision, multiplying current output (IOUT) D/A converters (DACs) that feature ±1 LSB INL and DNL specifications, from 12-bit up to an industry-leading 18-bit resolution. Our portfolio includes single and multiple D/A converters in small packages with parallel or serial SPI interfaces. Multiplying current output R-2R D/A converters allow for an external amplifier that’s optimized for specific applications and that does not require reference buffering, which enables high linearity. The SoftSpan™ feature allows software selectable output spans, therefore eliminating the need to add precision gain stages and the associated external jumpers, precision resistors, and amplifier circuitry. Integrated precision resistors allow for reference inversion, bipolar offset, and offset and gain adjustment.

Analog Devices’ pulse-width modulation (PWM) to voltage output D/A converters convert a PWM input to an accurate, stable, buffered voltage without the ripple, slow settling, and external passive components of discrete filter implementations. Our PWM D/A converters measure the period and pulse width of a PWM input signal and immediately update the D/A converter output with up to 12-bit accuracy and no software coding required. This family of D/A converters is available with 8-bit to 12-bit resolution, dual and quad channels, integrated references, and with high temperature operation. Applications include isolated motor control, automotive headlights or industrial lighting, and other applications that benefit from the simple control interface.

Analog Devices offers a large family of resistor string and R-2R voltage output (VOUT) D/A converters (DACs). From 8 bits up to 20 bits of resolution, single to 40 channels, integrated or external reference, parallel, LVDS, serial SPI or I2C interface, with high temperature operation, we have a D/A converter to suit your application. We provide precision, buffered, and unbuffered rail-to-rail VOUT D/A converters with up to ±1 LSB INL and DNL specifications and excellent offset and gain error. Our D/A converters work well in a wide variety of open-loop or closed-loop systems—adjusting gain, offset, and many other signals.
