The recently released ADuM3160 and ADuM4160 are the industry's first single package USB isolation solutions. Based on Analog Devices' proprietary iCoupler technology, the USB 2.0 compliant ADuM3160 and ADuM4160 are fully isolated to 1.5-Mbps and 12-Mbps and have been developed to lower system cost, reduce design size, and to lessen design time all while meeting the most demanding medical and industrial standards.

ADuM4160: For applications requiring 5kV rms isolation
The ADuM4160 offers 5kV rms isolation that is ideal for medical applications (IEC 60601-1 medical safety approval pending) as well as applications in harsh industrial environments. The isolation provided by the ADuM4160 will electrically isolate patients and equipment protecting them from harmful surges or spikes. The isolation also eliminates the need to disconnect during defibrillation.
ADuM3160: For applications requiring 2.5kV rms isolation
The ADuM3160 offers 2.5kV rms isolation and electrically isolates instrumentation and controls by protecting equipment from damaging surges or spikes and by eliminating down time when using non-isolated ports. The USB isolator requires safety certifications (i.e., UL, CSA, VDE) to prove protection capability. USB improves industrial and instrumentation solutions by making it easier, faster, and more flexible for staff to work with sensors, controls, equipment, and systems.
Isolated power is needed on either side of the isolation barrier in USB applications. Each side can provide its own power. For example, a patient monitor is plugged into the wall, and a laptop is powered by it's own battery. Another way to achieve power on either side of the isolation barrier is for the system to use an isolated DC/DC converter. Designers can use the ADuM5000 with an isolated power supply, or another source to provide power. The ADuM4160 evaluation board includes the ADuM5000 to provide isolated power.
The USB isolator evaluation board for the ADuM3160 and ADuM4160 is a plug and play board that has been constructed to allow easy interface to existing applications by standard cabling or discrete wire. The evaluation board package also comes with an ADuM5000 isolated DC/DC converter for applications that require isolated power. Learn more or to order...
