The LTC®9101-2/LTC9102 chipset is a 12/24-port power sourcing equipment (PSE) controller designed for use in IEEE 802.3bt Type 3 and 4 compliant Power over Ethernet (PoE) systems. The LTC9101-2/LTC9102 is designed to power compliant 802.3af, 802.3at, and 802.3bt PDs. The LTC9101-2/LTC9102 chipset delivers lowest-in-industry heat dissipation by utilizing low RDS(ON) external MOSFETs and 0.1Ω sense resistance per power channel. A transformer-isolated communication protocol replaces expensive opto-couplers and a complex isolated 3.3V supply, resulting in significant BOM cost savings.

Advanced power management features include per-port 14‑bit current/power monitoring, programmable current/power limits, and versatile fast shut-down of preselected ports. An advanced power management host software layer is available. PD detection uses a proprietary multipoint detection mechanism ensuring excellent immunity from false PD identification. Autoclass and 5-event physical classification are supported. The LTC9101-1/LTC9102 includes an I2C serial interface operable up to 1MHz. The LTC9101-1/LTC9102 is pin or I2C programmable to negotiate PD delivered power up to 71.3W.

The EVAL-LTC9101-2 is a 48-channel IEEE 802.3at/bt compliant power sourcing equipment (PSE). The EVAL-LTC9101-2 KIT includes the DC3159A-D or DC3159A-C daughter card, the DC3017A-B motherboard, and features the LTC9101-2A/LTC9101-2 and LTC9102 chipset.

In the EVAL-LTC9101-2 KIT, the daughter card has a single LTC9101-2A or LTC9101-2 digital controller. The DC3159A-D daughter card has the LTC9101-2A and the DC3159A-C has the LTC9101-2. The digital controller interfaces with four LTC9102 (12-channel) analog controllers for a total of 48 PSE channels.

The LTC9101-2A/LTC9101-2 use a proprietary isolated data interface allowing the LTC9101-2 to directly connect to the host controller I2C interface and eliminating the need for costly optocouplers and an additional 3.3 V supply.

The EVAL-LTC9101-2A Kit connects to up to forty-eight, 802.3af/at PDs with an Ethernet splitter for each two ports for 2-pair power evaluation. This kit version requires host control over I2C.

The EVAL-LTC9101-2 Kit connects to up to twenty-four, 802.3af/at/bt PDs directly at each port for 4-pair power evaluation. This kit version can operate autonomously or with host control over I2C.

Indicator LEDs quickly show channel status for the 48 power channels. An optional on-board buck regulator provides 3.3 V from the VEE supply for the digital circuity. The demonstration manual provides an EVAL-LTC9101-2 KIT overview and quick start procedure.

Demonstration kit 3160A-KIT is an Ethernet Alliance Gen 2 PoE certified, 24-port IEEE 802.3at/bt-compliant power sourcing equipment (PSE) composed of a DC3159A daughter card (48-channels) and DC3017A motherboard (24, 4-pair ports). The DC3160A-KIT features the LTC9101-1/LTC9102/LTC9103 PSE platform chipset.

In the DC3160A-KIT, a single LTC9101-1 digital controller interfaces with up to four analog controllers. The DC3159A-A daughter card has four LTC9102, 12-channel, analog controllers for 48 power channels total. The DC3159A-B daughter card has two LTC9102, 12-channel, analog controllers and two LTC9103, 8-channel, analog controllers for 40 power channels total. Up to twenty four IEEE 802.3af, IEEE 802.3at, or IEEE 802.3bt powered devices (PDs) can be connected to the DC3160A-KIT and powered from this system using a single power supply.

The LTC9101-1, LTC9102, and LTC9103 use a proprietary isolated data interface allowing the LTC9101-1 to directly connect to the host controller I2C interface and eliminates the need for costly opto-couplers and an additional 3.3V supply. The DC3160A-KIT can operate completely autonomously without a host controller or with a DC590 for I2C interfacing.

Robust surge protection is provided by design and onboard surge protection devices. Indicator LEDs show channel status for up to 48 power channels.
