The AD9834 is a 75 MHz low power DDS device capable of producing high performance sine and triangular outputs. It also has an on-board comparator that allows a square wave to be produced for clock generation. Consuming only 20 mW of power at 3 V makes the AD9834 an ideal candidate for power-sensitive applications.

Capability for phase modulation and frequency modulation is provided. The frequency registers are 28 bits; with a 75 MHz clock rate, resolution of 0.28 Hz can be achieved. Similarly, with a 1 MHz clock rate, the AD9834 can be tuned to 0.004 Hz resolution. Frequency and phase modulation are affected by loading registers through the serial interface and toggling the registers using software or the FSELECT pin and PSELECT pin, respectively.

The AD9834 is written to using a 3-wire serial interface. This serial interface operates at clock rates up to 40 MHz and is compatible with DSP and microcontroller standards.

The device operates with a power supply from 2.3 V to 5.5 V. The analog and digital sections are independent and can be run from different power supplies, for example, AVDD can equal 5 V with DVDD equal to 3 V.

The AD9834 has a power-down pin (SLEEP) that allows external control of the power-down mode. Sections of the device that are not being used can be powered down to minimize the current consumption. For example, the DAC can be powered down when a clock output is being generated.

The part is available in a 20-lead TSSOP.

AD9834 evaluation board (EVAL-CN0304-SDZ) is designed to help customers quickly prototype and reduce design time.The Eval- AD9834SDZ board only operates with the SDP-B development board. The evaluation board interfaces to the USB port via the SDP board. Software is available with the evaluation board, which allows the user to easily program the AD9834. This evaluation board requires the EVAL-SDP-CS1Z board. This is available on the Analog Devices website.Full data on the AD9834 may be found in the AD9834 data sheet available from Analog Devices and should be consulted in conjunction with this user guide when using the evaluation board.

The Eval- CN0304-SDZ board only operates with the SDP-S and SDP-B development board.

Hard to program
This part looks very hard to program, I firstly set the desired frequency, and after this I cannot change it. I write everything as in the documentation. And the SPI interface is very gently - with longed CS to SCLK delay is doesn't work.

excellent dds chip
I tested and used this great chip with a dds as signal generator. It has a very clean and very stable signal. I'll certainly advice and recommend to all my friends to use this chip and all other chips from Analog device. Great job with Analog Devices!

Great little chip
The 9834 gives superior performance while minimizing current draw. I've been running it at +3v supply for years in a 0-30 MHz signal generator. It has not hiccuped once during that time. Fist application was with a BRU device at 50 MHz. When the CRUZ device was offered for 75 MHz, I moved to that. Now it appears both the BRUZ and CRUZ are rated at 75 MHz. Will those ratings increase again? As well as it works, I wouldn't be surprised. Analog has a good product here.

Good choice for low frequency signal generator

low cost Lo for receiver
I use AD9834 for my SDR. cost performance is very good. easy to use and control from PC. if AD9834 has second out put like AD9854, it must be excellent for me.

Excellent choice for low-power DDS
We used this as a reference to an ADI PLL for an agile application which had to switch pretty quickly between two frequencies (with fine resolution). When combined with a good xtal filter, this DDS IC provided a pretty simple way of achieving our desired goal. Phase noise was pretty decent, and the spurious performance was very good as well. The only thing that would make this even better would be the ability to scale the power as needed - but for the price, this is hard to beat.

Finished Project
I use it in the final year project in signal generator, it work very well and easy to control. It performance is good which directly generate satisfactory waveform under 1MHz range. Due to tight package, the PCB has to be etch perfectly in hand-made PCB, to prevent short-circuit. My first prototype fail on that and take me a while to solve that.

Great DDS Chip - Easy to use
I use this DDS for generation of signals from sub-Hz to 1MHz and it works great. Coupled to an Analog Devices DAC, the amplitude can also be change accurately with large dynamic.

Significant Improvements compared to the 9850 or 51 for DDS Use
I would like to see the control word generated within the chip from a simple mechanical encoder. Freeing the computer chip from this makes many low cost chips able to handle everything else for a complete very small DDS. I think this is suitable for new designs as well as retro fitting many analog vfo designs.

The prototype worked well but the downturn in the local mining industry means that the main project has been placed on hold.
I know that the world has definately moved to SMD but for small production runs DIP packages still have a place and they are definately much easier to prototype with.

Excellent product, very easy to interface to pic32 family and others in general, using 5v and 3v3.
Probably 75Mhz dds clock is a little short for today signals. I personally prototype with a little overclock to 100Mhz, and I would desire to arrive to 200MHz or more, using same package, using an internal VCO, like ad9852. Digital output current control, instead of resistor one, would be fantastic also. Thanks.
