High Performance Fourth Generation DSP
The SHARC ADSP-21489 is one of two new members of the fourth generation of SHARC® Processors, that now includes the ADSP-21483, ADSP-21486, ADSP-21487, ADSP-21488, ADSP-21489 and offers increased performance, hardware-based filter accelerators, audio and application-focused peripherals, and new memory configurations capable of supporting the latest surround-sound decoder algorithms. All devices are pin-compatible with each other and completely code-compatible with all prior SHARC Processors. These newest members of the fourth generation SHARC Processor family are based on a single-instruction, multiple-data (SIMD) core, which supports both 32-bit fixed-point and 32-/40-bit floating-point arithmetic formats making them particularly suitable for high-performance audio applications.
The ADSP-21489 offers the highest performance – 450 MHz / 2700 MFLOPs – in an LQFP package within the fourth generation SHARC Processor family. This level of performance makes the ADSP-21489 particularly well suited to address the automotive audio and industrial control segments. In addition to its high core performance, the ADSP-21489 includes additional processing blocks such as FIR, IIR, and FFT accelerators to increase the total performance of the system. There is a new feature called Variable Instruction Set Architecture (VISA) that allows the code size to be decreased by 20% to 30% and increase the memory size availability. The fourth generation DSP allows the ability to connect to external memory by providing a glueless interface to 16-bit wide SDR SDRAMs.
Fourth-generation SHARC Processors also integrate application-specific peripherals designed to simplify hardware design, minimize design risks, and ultimately reduce time to market. Grouped together, and broadly named the Digital Applications Interface (DAI), these functional blocks may be connected to each other or to external pins via the software-programmable Signal Routing Unit (SRU). The SRU is an innovative architectural feature that enables complete and flexible routing amongst DAI blocks. Peripherals connected through the SRU include but are not limited to serial ports, IDP, S/PDIF Tx/Rx, and an 8-Channel asynchronous sample rate converter block. The fourth generation SHARC allows data from the serial ports to be directly transferred to external memory by the DMA controller. Other peripherals such as SPI,UART and Two-Wire Interface are routed through a Digital Peripheral Interface (DPI).

The EZ-KIT Lite includes an ADSP-21489 SHARC Processor desktop evaluation board along with an evaluation suite of the VisualDSP++® development and debugging environment, including the C/C++ compiler, assembler, and linker. The evaluation suite of VisualDSP++ is designed to be used with the EZ-KIT Lite only.
The EZ-KIT Lite also comes with a standalone debug agent board that is removable to allow a user to plug-in an external emulator.

The EVAL-MELODY-5 is a comprehensive, integrated DSP and HDMI™ based development platform to facilitate the design and development of AVRs, soundbars, multichannel gaming headphones and powered speakers. The hardware incorporates latest DSP and HDMI products and is supported by CrossCore® Eclipse-based tools and the user friendly GUI-based SigmaStudio™ for SHARC®. The development board is an optimized hardware design that utilizes two fourth generation SHARC processor, the ADSP-21489, running at 400MHz and the new 4K resolution UHD capable crosspoint transceiver.
All control and housekeeping functions on the EVAL-MELODY-5 platform are efficiently performed by a Blackfin® BF524 processor.
Dolby Atmos® and DTS:X decoders have been implemented and are certified by Dolby and DTS respectively at the IC level to reduce uncertainty regarding product certification. The UHD capabilities of the ADV7625 crosspoint transceiver support a 4K video pass through and allow HDMI embedded audio to be extracted, processed and either reinserted or rendered locally.
The hardware design allows cascading multiple SHARC processors to facilitate the development of systems that require more than two DSPs. The two DSPs execute Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoders and the board may be interfaced to additional DSP processors for executing post processing routines. The ADV7625 HDMI Transceiver passes through video while extracting the embedded audio for processing by the DSPs and then optionally re-inserting the audio into the HDMI output stream.
Based on ADI’s award-winning SigmaStudio for SigmaDSP® digital signal processor tool, the SigmaStudio for SHARC tool is a programming, development and real-time tuning software environment that enables developers to graphically design and program audio applications for SHARC processors using an extensive, optimized library of more than 100 pre-built audio algorithms such as filtering, mixing, and dynamics processing, as well as basic low-level DSP functions and control blocks. SigmaStudio runs on a PC connected to the EVAL-MELODY-5 platform and helps software and audio engineers shorten their design times. SigmaStudio is unique in that it has proven to be friendly to audio designers while also meeting the needs of software engineers. It is easy to create software schematics by dragging the required modules from a library of about 100 different modules that are available. The CrossCore® Eclipse-based tools provide an easy development environment and are in used in conjunction with the SigmaStudio for SHARC.

The plug-and-play architecture of USB allows the emulators to be automatically detected and configured by the host operating system. It can also be connected to and disconnected from the host without opening the PC or turning off the power to the PC.
