The ADL5206 is a wide bandwidth, variable gain amplifier (VGA) with digital control (also known as a digital gain amplifier (DGA)) that provides precise gain control, high output third-order intercept (OIP3), and low noise figure over the entire gain range. The excellent OIP3 performance of 39.4 dBm (at 300MHz, 5 V supply, and maximum gain) makes the ADL5206 an excellent gain control device for a variety of receiver applications.
For wide input dynamic range applications, the ADL5206 provides a broad 2 dB to 32 dB gain range with a 1 dB step size. The gain is adjustable through multiple gain control and interface options: parallel, serial peripheral interface (SPI), or gain step-up and step-down controls.
The ADL5206 can be powered up independently by applying the appropriate logic level to the PWUP pin. The quiescent current of the ADL5206 is typically 112 mA with a 5 V supply. When disabled, the ADL5206 consumes only 8 mA and offers excellent input to output isolation. The gain setting is preserved when the device is disabled.
Fabricated on the Analog Devices, Inc., high speed, silicon germanium (SiGe), bipolar complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (BiCMOS) process, the ADL5206 provides precise gain adjustment capabilities with good distortion performance. The ADL5206 amplifier comes in a compact, thermally enhanced, 4 mm × 4 mm, 20-lead LFCSP and operates over the temperature range of −40°C to +85°C.
Note that throughout the data sheet, multifunction pins, such as CS/GS1/D3, are referred to by the entire pin name or by a single function of the pin.

The ADL5206-EVALZ evaluation board allows the manual control of the ADL5206 through the serial and parallel interface ports, as well as through the USB port on a PC operating Microsoft® Windows® via the system demonstration platform (SDP-S) controller board. A 3.3 V low dropout (LDO) voltage regulator supplies the logic circuits when the ADL5206 is running on a 5 V supply.
Connect the ADL5206-EVALZ to the SDP-S to allow for quick evaluation of the ADL5206 (see Figure 3). In addition, the ADL5206-EVALZ can be configured over a USB from a panel within the Analog Devices, Inc., ACE software.
For full details on the ADL5206, see the ADL5206 data sheet, which must be consulted in conjunction with the user guide when using the ADL5206-EVALZ.
- Full featured evaluation board for the ADL5206
- Easy connection to test equipment and other circuits
- PC control via a separately purchased system demonstration platform (EVAL-SDP-CS1Z)
- 5.0 V or 3.3V single-supply operation

API Device Drivers
Device Application Programming Interface (API) C code drivers provided as reference code that allows the user to quickly configure the product using high-level function calls. The library acts as an abstraction layer between the application and the hardware. The API is developed in C99 to ensure agnostic processor and operating system integration. Customers can port this application layer code to their embedded systems by integrating their platform-specific code base to the API HAL layer.
To request this software package, go to the Software Request Form signed in with your MyAnalog account and under “Target Hardware” select “High Speed RF Products” and choose the desired API product package. You will receive an email notification once the software is provided to you.
ADIsimRF is an easy-to-use RF signal chain calculator. Cascaded gain, noise, distortion and power consumption can be calculated, plotted and exported for signal chains with up to 50 stages. ADIsimRF also includes an extensive data base of device models for ADI’s RF and mixed signal components.
ADI has always placed the highest emphasis on delivering products that meet the maximum levels of quality and reliability. We achieve this by incorporating quality and reliability checks in every scope of product and process design, and in the manufacturing process as well. "Zero defects" for shipped products is always our goal.
