The MAX5974_ provide control for wide-input-voltage, active-clamped, current-mode PWM, forward converters in Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) powered device (PD) applications. The MAX5974A/MAX5974C are well-suited for universal or telecom input range, while the MAX5974B/MAX5974D also accommodate low input voltage down to 10.5V.

The devices include several features to enhance supply efficiency. The AUX driver recycles magnetizing current instead of wasting it in a dissipative clamp circuit. Programmable dead time between the AUX and main driver allows for zero-voltage switching (ZVS). Under light-load conditions, the devices reduce the switching frequency (frequency foldback) to reduce switching losses.

The MAX5974A/MAX5974B feature unique circuitry to achieve output regulation without using an optocoupler, while the MAX5974C/MAX5974D utilize the traditional optocoupler feedback method. An internal error amplifier with a 1% reference is very useful in nonisolated design, eliminating the need for an external shunt regulator.

The devices feature a unique feed-forward maximum duty-cycle clamp that makes the maximum clamp voltage during transient conditions independent of the line voltage, allowing the use of a power MOSFET with lower breakdown voltage. The programmable frequency dithering feature provides low-EMI, spread-spectrum operation.

The MAX5974_ are available in 16-pin TQFN-EP packages and are rated for operation over the -40°C to +85°C and -40°C to +125°C temperature ranges.

Product Detail

The MAX5974A evaluation kit (EV kit) is a fully assembled and tested surface-mount circuit board featuring the MAX5974A active-clamped, spread-spectrum, current-mode PWM controller for Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) powered device (PD) applications. The EV kit is a compact and low-cost design used in Power-over-LAN (PoLAN) applications requiring DC power from an Ethernet network port for PDs such as IP phones, wireless access nodes, and security cameras.

The EV kit features a galvanically isolated 25W, 600kHz switching frequency forward DC-DC converter using the IC. The circuit achieves high efficiency up to 92% (VIN = +42V) using a coupled-inductor forward DC-DC converter topology. The surface-mount transformer provides up to +1650V galvanic isolation for the output. The EV kit output voltage is configured for +5V and provides up to 4.7A load current.

The EV kit includes the MAX5969B IEEE® 802.3af/at-compliant network PD interface-controller IC, which provides PD detection signature, PD classification signature, in-rush current control, and undervoltage lockout (UVLO).

The EV kit circuit receives its power from IEEE 802.3af/at-compliant power-sourcing equipment (PSE). The PSE provides the required -30V to -57V DC power over an unshielded twisted-pair Ethernet network cable to the EV kit's RJ45 MagJack®. The EV kit features a 1 x 1Gb RJ45 MagJack and two full-bridge diodes for separating the DC power provided by an endspan or midspan Ethernet system.

The EV kit circuit can also be powered by a +37V to +57V wall-adapter power source applied at the PWR+ and PWR- PCB pads. When a wall-adapter power source is detected, it takes precedence over the PSE source, allowing the wall adapter to power the EV kit.

Warning: The EV kit is designed to operate with high voltages. Dangerous voltages are present on this EV kit and on equipment connected to it. Users who power up this EV kit or power the sources connected to it must be careful to follow safety procedures appropriately to work with high-voltage electrical equipment.

Under severe fault or failure conditions, this EV kit may dissipate large amounts of power that could result in the mechanical ejection of a component or of component debris at high velocity. Operate this kit with care to avoid possible personal injury.

Product Detail

The MAX5995 evaluation kit (EV kit) is a fully assembled and tested surface-mount circuit board featuring an Ethernet port, network powered-device (PD) interface controller circuit for -57V supply rail systems. The EV kit uses the MAX5995B IEEE® 802.3af/at/bt-compliant network PD interface controller in a 16-pin TQFN package with an exposed pad. The IC is used in Power-over- Ethernet (PoE) applications requiring DC power from an Ethernet network port for PDs such as VoIP phones, wireless access nodes, security cameras, lighting, and building automation.

The EV kit receives power from IEEE 802.3af/at/btcompliant power-sourcing equipment (PSE). Refer to the MAX5952, MAX5965A/MAX5965B, and MAX5980 IC data sheets for PSE controllers. The PSE provides the required -36V to -57V DC power over an unshielded twisted-pair Ethernet network cable to the EV kit’s RJ45 magnetic jack. The EV kit features a 1 x 1 Gigabit RJ45 magnetic jack and two active full-wave rectifiers (N101 and N102) for separating the DC power provided by an endspan or midspan Ethernet system.

The EV kit can also be powered by a wall adapter power source. The EV kit provides PCB pads to accept the output of a wall adapter power source. When a wall adapter power source is detected, it always takes precedence over the PSE source and allows the wall adapter to power the EV kit.

The EV kit demonstrates the full functionality of the IC, such as PD detection signature, PD classification signature, Multi-Event Classification (MEC), Intelligent MPS, inrush current control, input undervoltage lockout (UVLO), and DC-DC step-down converter. The step-down converter operates at a fixed 290kHz switching frequency and is configured for an isolated active-clamped forward topology with output voltage +12V DC that can deliver 5.5A of current.
