The LTC5597 is a high accuracy RMS power detector that provides a very wide RF input bandwidth, from 100MHz up to 70GHz. This makes the device suitable for a wide range of RF and microwave applications, such as point-to-point microwave links, instrumentation and power control applications.
The DC output voltage of the detector is an accurate representation of the average signal power applied to the RF input. The response is linear-in-dB with 28.5mV/dB logarithmic slope over a 35dB dynamic range with typically better than ±1dB accuracy. The detector is particularly suited for measurement of waveforms with crest factor (CF) as high as 12dB, and waveforms that exhibit a significant variation of the crest factor during measurement.
To achieve higher accuracy and lower output ripple, the averaging bandwidth can be externally adjusted by a capacitor connected between the FLTR and OUT pins. The enable interface switches the device between active measurement mode and a low power shutdown mode.

Demonstration circuit DC3129A-KIT is a Linduino® evaluation kit for RMS Power Detector LTC5597. It is set up for quick evaluation of RMS RF power measurement using the Arduino/Linduino compatible platform and software download available. When connected to PC with USB cable, accurate power level can be monitored using the graphic user interface.
The LTC5597 is a wide dynamic range linear-in-dB RMS RF Power Detector, operational from 100 MHz to 70 GHz. The Linduino (DC2026C) platform provides 10-bit ADC at 4.9 mV/LSB resolution with 5V default reference voltage. Input dynamic range with 1 dB accuracy is up to 35 dB depending on frequency. The detector output slope is normally 6 LSB/dB. The DC3129A-KIT is optimized for wide operational frequency signals up to 70 GHz using the 1.85mm edge mount connector. Input impedance is internally matched to 50Ω. It is suitable for RMS measurements of high crest factor waveforms up to 12 dB peak-to-average. No external coupling capacitor is necessary if DC voltage at RFIN pin is kept below 1.0V. On board 3.3V regulator provides power to the shield by jumper JP1. Demonstration circuit 2932A hosts a high accuracy RMS power detector featuring the LTC5597 IC. This ultrawide bandwidth device has a RMS response that measures RF and microwave signals from 100MHz to 70GHz. The input signal converts to a DC voltage that is logarithmically proportional to the input signal level. Moreover, the LTC5597 offers unprecedented sensitivity, capable of detecting signals of –37dBm typical. Additionally, it has outstanding input dynamic range up to 35dB, achieving 1dB accuracy, depending on frequency. The detector output voltage slope is normally 29mV/dB. The PCB layout employs the recommended microstrip transmission line structure, as well as the recommended endpoint transitions. Input impedance to LTC5597 is internally matched to 50Ω. It is suitable for RMS measurements of high crest factor waveforms up to 12dB peak/average ratio. No external coupling capacitor is necessary if DC voltage at RFIN pin is kept below 1V.
