Intelligent Linear Motion Control for Fast and Accurate Positioning

Our robust, accurate, and high bandwidth ADI MagIC+ current sense technology monitors the required current of the application. An inverted pendulum is unstable without control, that is, the pendulum will simply fall over if the cart below the pendulum arm isn't moved to balance it. The objective of the control system is to balance the inverted pendulum by applying a force to the cart that the pendulum is attached to.

This video showcases precise and accurate ADI components and control algorithms with a brushless DC (BLDC) linear motor that will allow the pendulum to remain balanced and not fall over, even when an external force is applied to it. In addition, a contactless AC and DC current clamp meter is demonstrated that uses the ADAF1080 magnetic field sensor. The ADAF1080 enables high bandwidth current measurement in a contactless way without the need for shielding or flux concentrators greatly reducing cost and complexity for our customers.

40% to 50% of overall electric energy is used by e-motors. Using Field Oriented Control (FOC) BLDC Servos instead of DC Motors can allow customers to cut this motor energy consumption by 20% or more. No expert knowledge is needed to realize expert level motor control. Today, there are around 700 million motors in operation. Inefficient motors cause the majority of the pollution, and wasted energy driven by inefficient motors generates pollution unnecessarily.

At ADI, we are creating motor control solutions and components, such as current sense amplifiers (e.g. AD8410A) and servo controllers (e.g. TMC4671), that help our customers achieve better efficiency in their applications. Little efficiency gains that may save consumers millions of dollars each year in power could also help to conserve finite fossil fuel supply and keep pollution out of the environment.
