The AD5932 is a waveform generator providing a programmable frequency scan. Utilizing embedded digital processing allowing enhanced frequency control the device generates synthesized analog or digital frequency-stepped waveforms. Because frequency profiles are preprogrammed continuous write cycles are eliminated, thereby freeing up valuable DSP/µController resources. Waveforms start from a known phase and are incremented phase continuously allowing phase shifts to be easily determined.

To program the device, the user enters the start frequency, the increment step size, the number of increments to be made and the time interval the part stays at each frequency. The frequency profile can be initiated by toggling the CTRL pin.

A number of different scan profiles are offered. The user can choose to output the last frequency in the scan continuously, or can choose to return to midscale.

The AD5932 is written to via a 3-wire serial interface, which operates at clock rates up to 40 MHz. The device operates with a power supply from 2.3 V to 5.5 V and has a standby function which allows sections of the device that are not being used to be powered down.

The AD5932 is available in a 16-pin TSSOP package.

The evaluation board can be used as a standalone board, with control coming from an external DSP or microcontroller, or it can be connected to a PC. Software is provided that can be used to program the registers of the AD5932.

At one of the more entry-level devices to the DDS world, I found this part to be very easy to design in, reasonable in cost and sufficiently low enough power for the field radio instruments I used it in. Be aware that the 24 bits of tuning resolution will not net you some of the finer tuning resolutions (1Hz) that you get with the higher bit devices such at the AD9834. In addition, the 10-bit DAC will be introducing more artifacts in the output spectrum, and will need to be dealt with accordingly. My personal recommendation if you want to get the best frequency performance is to get a custom cut crystal for your application of the frequency 41.943MHz, rather than the 50MHz oscillator off the shelf. This custom crystal will get you 2.5Hz of tuning per LSB, which makes for easier integer math with standard microcontrollers on the market.

how to program it
i tried configuring it through aurdino...i am able to configure control register...i can turn off or on msb out enable.....but i am not getting output of it even after configuring freq start register and triggering the contol pin...can anyone help???

Versatile signal source

AD5932 Review
It is a powerful chip and can handle many waveform generation. It'll be nice if various application notes with software codes can be included to help to do the fast development.
