The ADuM4160 is a USB port isolator, based on Analog Devices, Inc., iCoupler® technology. Combining high speed CMOS and monolithic air core transformer technology, these isolation components provide outstanding performance characteristics and are easily integrated with low and full speed USB-compatible peripheral devices.

Many microcontrollers implement USB so that it presents only the D+ and D− lines to external pins. This is desirable in many cases because it minimizes external components and simplifies the design; however, this presents particular challenges when isolation is required. USB lines must automatically switch between actively driving D+/D−, receiving data, and allowing external resistors to set the idle state of the bus. The ADuM4160 provides mechanisms for detecting the direction of data flow and control over the state of the output buffers. Data direction is determined on a packet-by-packet basis.

The ADuM4160 uses the edge detection based iCoupler technology in conjunction with internal logic to implement a transparent, easily configured, upstream facing port isolator. Isolating an upstream facing port provides several advantages in simplicity, power management, and robust operation.

The isolator has propagation delay comparable to that of a standard hub and cable. It operates with the supply voltage on either side ranging from 3.1 V to 5.5 V, allowing connection directly to VBUS by internally regulating the voltage to the signaling level. The ADuM4160 provides isolated control of the pull-up resistor to allow the peripheral to control connection timing. The device has a low idle current; a suspend mode is required.

Product Details

The USB isolator evaluation board been constructed to allow easy interface to existing applications by standard cabling or discrete wiring. The board allows configuration of all the features of the ADuM3160 and ADuM4160 chips as well as provides support for a variety of possible power schemes. The evaluation board also allows common mode voltages but is not recommended for performing safety related testing such as high voltage withstand testing. This type of testing should be performed on the component level or on a production board.

The ezLINX™ iCoupler® Isolated Interface Development Environment provides developers with a cost-effective, plug and play method for evaluation eight physical layer, digitally-isolated communication standards (USB, RS-422, RS-485, RS-232, CAN, SPI, I2C, and LVDS). The Blackfin® ADSP-BF548 processor is used to run the uCLinux operating system and allows for easy customization through the open source hardware and software platform. Development time is significantly reduced for embedded designers and system architects who are designing and evaluating isolated communication standards. The interfaces on ezLINX use ADI's isolated transceivers with integrated iCoupler® and isoPower® digital isolator technology.

The ADUM4160 is a very good solution for insulation USB Ports 5kV is great! for Medical devices I need 4kV and that is a very good headroom. This IC is a very good choice and an easy way to separate the usb.

ADUM4160 in harsh context
I have used it to isolate USB in an industrial application. Works well after fine tuning a few bypass capacitors.

Simple USB Isolation
The ADUM4160 offers a small and simple solution to isolate the usb bus from in our case analog circuit. It was used to replace the former NF isolators gaining an overall space saving.

Amazing isolation
This product is super simple to implement and works as advertised- my only complaint is that it can't support USB3, but to be honest I don't know if any single chip solution can offer isolation at USB3 speeds.

Digital isolator on digital music streaming (wired)
We are working on UC3Music-e association at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. We are wondering of using your ADUM to isolate a wired live streaming signal (spdif and aes/ebu) To prevent damage and improving ease of use on our digital Stage-Front Of House mixer-Public Adress. We dont use this ADUM yet, but if we suceed, we will write you soon.

Right solution to right time
This isolator replaced three other isolators in my design - one for RS232 and two for signal lines. So I decided to isolate on the USB side instead in redesign - and it worked like a chram. Less space, lower overall part count and no performance issues at all.

Perfrect USB1 isolator
It's very easy to implement this isolator in your device. Not sensitive to PCB layout etc, used it successfully via a SOIC to DIP converter. The major let-down is that it is limited to 12mpbs (USB1). One of the prominent "features" reads: "Fully USB 2.0 compliant". But this is rather confusing. It is USB 2 compliant, as long as the connected device supports a fall-back to USB 1.1. The datasheet and the info page should be much clearer about the limitations. Many people will not know that "Fully USB 2.0 compliant" + "Full speed USB" means it does NOT support USB 2!!!

Sorry, but the PCB is manufactoring, but your IC ist not mounted, I think, in the next half year, I get a student. The Student will test aur IC and giv then a feed back to You. Sorry

This produc t works very reliable and featured.
I would need also analog isolator, with this isolation capability. OR digital with AD converter at front end , combined with small HV isolating DC-DC converter.

Difficult to exactly know which pins is used for
I had trouble with the configuration pins, because I don't speak very well english and I do wrong the wiring.
