The ADA4870 is a unity gain stable, high speed current feedback amplifier capable of delivering 1 A of output current and 2500 V/μs slew rate from a 40 V supply. Manufactured using the Analog Devices, Inc., proprietary high voltage extra fast complementary bipolar (XFCB) process, the innovative architecture of the ADA4870 enables high output power, high speed signal processing solutions in applications that require driving a low impedance load.

The ADA4870 is ideal for driving high voltage power FETs, piezo transducers, PIN diodes, CCD panels, and a variety of other demanding applications that require high speed from high supply voltage at high output current.

The ADA4870 is available in a power SOIC package (PSOP_3), featuring an exposed thermal slug that provides high thermal conductivity, enabling efficient heat transfer for improved perfor-mance and reliability in demanding applications. The ADA4870 operates over the industrial temperature range (−40°C to +85°C).

The evaluation board, ADA4870ARR-EBZ, provides a platform for quick and easy evaluation of the ADA4870.

The ADA4870ARR-EBZ evaluation board differs from schematics in UG-685 as follows:

  1. C71 removed
  2. R19 changed from 1.21k to 300Ω
  3. R29 changed from 2.43k to 0Ω

With proper heat-sinking, this op amp probably is the best low/mid powered audio amplifier in the market in terms of sound quality. This chip is versatile in driving many types of loads.

Our application for the ADA4870 is driving solid state optical amplifiers (SOA) with a shaping envelope applied to the pumping current to flatten out the output power profile in response to varying power input into the SOA. So far the circuit is in its early review state so I can not yet give a full assessment on its performance; the circuit is performing well, but further measurements on bandwidth and reponse to steep/transient slope modulation events are yet to be taken.

Great product
unfortunately my project is stalled at the moment :-( But if it comes to life again I will definetly use this driver !

ADA4870 Good amp, but watch out for SOA.
Have used this part to design a power amplifier for impedance measurements. Works well and we have achieved the specified full power bandwidth. However need to watch out for the SOA limitation (see fig 74). If used with supply voltage more than 20V (e.g. +30, -10V) then short circuit current needs to be limited or damage will result.

I did not tried this IC yet, but what I have learned from the Datasheet, speaks for ANALOG DEVICES excellent: both the quality of the Document and the OpAmp performances. Very impressive! THANK YOU!
