Analog Devices is a pioneer in electronic energy metering through our early introduction of energy metrology components. Increasingly, the use of Automated Meter Reading (AMR) and Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) systems has intensified the requirements for efficient meter communications systems, and once again ADI technology is at the forefront. ADI supports all types of metering systems with a wide range of solutions including metrology, isolation, power management, and communication products.
The ADE7912/ADE7913 are isolated, 3-channel Σ-Δ ADCs for a variety of applications such as shunt-based polyphase meters, power quality monitoring, solar inverters, process monitoring and protective devices. Data and power isolation are based on the Analog Devices, Inc., iCoupler® technology. The ADE7912 features two ADCs, and the ADE7913 features three ADCs. The current ADC provides a 67 dB signal-to-noise ratio over a 3 kHz signal bandwidth, whereas the voltage ADCs provide a SNR of 72 dB over the same bandwidth. One channel is dedicated to measuring the voltage across a shunt when the shunt is used for current sensing. Up to two additional channels are dedicated to measuring voltages, which are usually sensed using resistor dividers. One voltage channel can be used to measure the temperature of the die via an internal sensor. The ADE7913 includes three channels: one current and two voltage channels. The ADE7912 has one voltage channel but is otherwise identical to the ADE7913.

The ADE7953 is a high accuracy electrical energy measurement IC intended for single phase applications. It measures line voltage and current and calculates active, reactive, and apparent energy, as well as instantaneous rms voltage and current.
The device incorporates three Σ-Δ ADCs with a high accuracy energy measurement core. The second input channel simultaneously measures neutral current and enables tamper detection and neutral current billing. The additional channel incorporates a complete signal path that allows a full range of measurements. Each input channel supports independent and flexible gain stages, making the device suitable for use with a variety of current sensors such as current transformers (CTs) and low value shunt resistors. Two on-chip integrators facilitate the use of Rogowski coil sensors.
The ADE7953 provides access to on-chip meter registers via a variety of communication interfaces including SPI, I2C, and UART. Two configurable low jitter pulse output pins provide outputs that are proportional to active, reactive, or apparent energy, as well as current and voltage rms. A full range of power quality information such as overcurrent, overvoltage, peak, and sag detection are accessible via the external IRQ pin. Independent active, reactive, and apparent no-load detections are included to prevent “meter creep.” Dedicated reverse power (REVP), zero-crossing voltage (ZX), and zero-crossing current (ZX_I) pins are also provided. The ADE7953 energy metering IC operates from a 3.3 V supply voltage and is available in a 28-lead LFCSP package.

The ADE7816 is a highly accurate, multichannel metering device that is capable of measuring one voltage channel and up to six current channels. It measures line voltage and current and calculates active and reactive energy, as well as instantaneous rms voltage and current. The device incorporates seven sigma-delta (Σ-Δ) ADCs with a high accuracy energy measurement core. The six current input channels allow multiple loads to be measured simultaneously. The voltage channel and the six current channels each have a complete signal path allowing for a full range of measurements. Each input channel supports a flexible gain stage and is suitable for use with current transformers (CTs). Six on-chip digital integrators facilitate the use of the Rogowski coil sensors.
The ADE7816 provides access to on-chip meter registers via either the SPI or I2C interface. A dedicated high speed interface, the high speed data capture (HSDC) port, can be used in conjunction with I2C to provide access to real-time ADC output information. A full range of power quality information, such as overcurrent, overvoltage, peak, and sag detection, is accessible via the two external interrupt pins, IRQ0 and IRQ1.
The ADE7816 energy metering IC operates from a 3.3 V supply voltage and is available in a 40-lead LFCSP that is Pb free and RoHS compliant.
