The LTM4636-1 is a 40A step-down μModule^® (power module) switching regulator with stacked inductor as a heat sink for heat dissipation and cooler operation in a small package. The LTM4636-1 detects overtemperature and input/output overvoltage conditions and can trip an upstream power supply or circuit breaker to protect itself and its load. The exposed inductor as a heat sink permits direct contact with airflow from any direction. The LTM4636-1 can deliver 40W (12V_IN, 1V_OUT, 40A, 200LFM) with only 40°C rise over the ambient temperature. Full-power 40W is delivered up to 83°C ambient and half-power 20W is supported at 110°C ambient.

The LTM4636-1 operates at 92%, 90% and 88% efficiency delivering 15A, 30A and 40A, respectively, to a 1V load (12V_IN). The μModule regulator is scalable where four in current sharing deliver 160W with only 40°C rise and 88% efficiency (12V_IN, 1V_OUT, 400LFM). The LTM4636-1 is offered in 16mm × 16mm × 7.07mm BGA package.

Demonstration circuit 2230A-B features the LTM4636-1EY, a 40A high efficiency, switch mode step-down power μModule^® regulator with overtemperature and input/output overvoltage protection. The input voltage range is from 4.7V to 15V. For a 4.7V to 5.5V input voltage range, short PV_CC pin to the V_IN pin with R8 = R21 = 0Ω and remove R17. The output voltage range is 0.6V to 3.3V. Derating is necessary for certain V_IN, V_OUT, frequency and thermal conditions. The board operates in continuous conduction mode with heavy load conditions. For high efficiency at low load currents, the MODE_PLLIN jumper selects pulse-skipping mode for noise sensitive applications or Burst Mode^® operation in less noise sensitive applications. The MODE_PLLIN pin also allows the LTM463-16 to synchronize to an external clock signal. DC2230A-B has the option of choosing either internal or external compensation circuit for the LTM4636-1. Tying the PHASMD pin to a different voltage generates a certain phase difference between the MODE_PLLIN and CLKOUT pins. The LTM4636-1 data sheet must be read in conjunction with this demo manual prior to working on or modifying demo circuit DC2230A-B.

Demonstration circuit DC2448A-D features a PolyPhase^® design using the LTM4636-1EY, a 40A high efficiency, switch mode step-down power µModule^® regulator with overvoltage and overtemperature protection features. The input voltage range is from 9V to 15V. The output voltage range is 0.6V to 3.3V. The DC2448A-D can deliver a nominal 160A output current. DC2448A-D has on-boardhot swap circuit that can disconnect input supply and protect the LTM4636-1 and the load under overvoltage and overtemperature conditions. As explained in the data sheet, output current derating is necessary for certain V_IN, V_OUT and thermal conditions. The board operates in continuous conduction mode in heavy load conditions.
