The MAX35103 is a time-to-digital converter with built-in amplifier and comparator targeted as a low-cost analog front-end solution for the ultrasonic heat meter and flow meter markets. It is similar to the MAX35101, but consumes about half the average power and increases the maximum ToF measurement frequency in event timing mode from 2Hz to 16Hz.

With a time measurement accuracy of 20ps and automatic differential time-of-flight (ToF) measurement, this device makes for simplified computation of liquid flow.

Average power consumption is the lowest available with ultra-low 5.5μA ToF measurement and < 125nA duty-cycled temperature measurement.

Product Detail

The MAX35103 evaluation kit (EV kit) provides the hardware and graphical user interface (GUI) software necessary to evaluate the MAX35103 time-to-digital converter designed for ultrasonic heat, water, and gas meters. The EV kit includes a MAX35103EHJ+ installed, as well as the required USB-to-SPI interface needed to communicate with the IC. The USB-to-SPI master section of the EV kit, along with the EV kit software, provides a quick method to exercise the device’s functionality.

The EV kit can be powered by the USB to simplify an evaluation setup, but also comes equipped with banana jacks that enable an external supply, such as a battery, to power the system. Provided BNC connectors allow for quick connection to piezoelectric transducers housed in a spool body. The provided terminal-block connectors allow for easy connection to the two remote platinum RTDs.

Product Detail

The MAX35103EVKIT2 provides an application example using the MAX35103 time-to-digital converter to measure water flow as part of an off-the-shelf residential irrigation system. The kit includes a PCB and ultrasonic transducer assembly that can be added to standard 24VAC irrigation systems to provide enhanced shut-off irrigation control.

The kit features a MAX32620 Arm® Cortex®-M4 low-power MCU that executes application firmware. Debug support is provided by a 10-pin JTAG connector and a 3.3V TTL UART connector. Future Mbed™ support is provided by the included MAX32625PICO module.

The kit is designed to be inserted between a 24VAC irrigation controller and an irrigation valve. The valve and controller are optional and are not included but can easily be obtained at most home improvement retailers.
