The MAX14906 is an IEC 61131-2 compliant, high-speed, four-channel industrial digital output, digital input device that can be configured on a per-channel basis as a high-side (HS) switch, push-pull (PP) driver, or a Type 1 and 3, or Type 2 digital input. The MAX14906 is specified for operation with a supply voltage up to 40V and is tolerant to 65V.

The high-side switch current limiting is settable from 130mA to 1.2A with the option of 2x load inrush current. The high-side driver on-resistance is 120mΩ (typ) at 25°C ambient temperature. Optional push-pull operation allows high speed driving of cables and fast discharge of load capacitance. For digital input operation, current sinks for 2.3mA (Type 1 and 3) or 7mA (Type 2) are provided.

The SPI interface has a built-in chip addressing decoder, allowing communication with multiple MAX14906 devices utilizing a shared SPI with a common chip select active-low CS. The SPI interface provides flexibility for global and per-channel configuration and diagnostics, including supply overvoltage and undervoltage detection, wire-break or open-wire detection, thermal overload and current limit reporting, and more. For high-speed operation, the digital input and output states can be monitored and changed directly using pins for increased system speed and throughput.

Open-wire detection monitors open-wire/open-load conditions with switches in the off state. LED drivers provide indication of per-channel fault, status, and supply undervoltage conditions. Internal active clamps allow for fast turn-off of inductive loads. Integrated line-to-ground and line-to-line surge protection only requires a TVS on VDD.

The MAX14906 is available in a compact 48-pin 7mm x 7mm QFN package.

Product Detail

The MAX14906 peripheral module provides the hardware to evaluate the MAX14906 four-channel configurable industrial digital input/output (DIO) device. Refer to the MAX14906 IC data sheet for detailed information regarding the operation of the IC. The module takes advantage of the features in the MAX14906 that allow DOI_ to be configured as a high-side or push-pull digital output, or a type 1/3 or type 2 digital input. The external pMOS on board allows the DOI_ to go higher than the 24V field supply for full IEC 61131-2 digital input compatibility.

Note: The module provides a subset of the MAX14906 features. For greater flexibility, refer to the MAX14906 Evaluation Kit.

The MAX14906PMB# has a 12-pin Pmod™-compatible connector for SPI communication. The peripheral module can be used in various ways; Analog Devices sells the low-cost USB2PMB2# and USB2GPIO# adapter boards that use the Munich GUI software for SPI communication through a USB cable. This is not included with this board but is available from Analog Devices or one of its distributors. Alternatively, any microcontroller or FPGA with a 12-pin Pmod-compatible connector for SPI communication can be used.

The PCB dimension is just 62mm x 22.6mm, with the width determined by the size of the DOI terminal block J2. Figure 1 shows the MAX14906PMB# board photo.

Product Detail

The AD-SWIOT1L-SL provides a complete software and hardware platform for prototyping intelligent, secure, network capable field devices.

The design incorporates the AD74413R Quad-Channel, Software Configurable Input and Output and the MAX14906 Quad-Channel Industrial Digital Output/Digital Input ICs, allowing the multiplexing of several analog and digital functions on four channels which can be independently configurable through software to act as:

  • voltage output / input
  • current output / input
  • digital input / output
  • RTD measurement

A 10 Mbps single-pair Ethernet link, using the ADIN1110 10BASE-T1L MAC/PHY, enables remote data acquisition and device configuration. The 10BASE-T1L interface can also be used for powering the system via the Single-pair Power over Ethernet (SPoE) technology using the LTC9111 Powered Device (PD) controller. This way, power and data for the system is provided over the same cable to significantly simplify the cabling infrastructure and cost.

For applications requiring high current capabilities, the system can be powered from an external 24 V supply and up to 1.2 A can be output on any of the channels configured as digital outputs. The power supply solution also includes the ADP1032 high performance, isolated micropower management unit (PMU) to provide power and digital control for software configurable I/O devices in one of the most compact formats. The LT8304 Micropower No-Opto Isolated Flyback Converter completes the power tree to provide isolated power to the digital part of the design.

The on-board MAX32650 Ultralow Power ARM® Cortex®-M4 Microcontroller exposes all the necessary debug and programming features to enable a complete software development experience with the system. It is coupled with a 1 Gb (128 MB) external RAM and a 64 Mb (8 MB) external flash memory to meet the most demanding applications and provide the flexibility to implement any protocol stack. Security features are enabled by the MAXQ1065 security coprocessor.

The system is accompanied by an open-source software stack and associated collateral, enabling a complete experience from evaluation and prototyping all the way to production firmware and applications development. An external programmer such as the MAX32625PICO MAXDAP Programming Adapter, or any other similar programmer supporting the SWD interface, is required to enable firmware programming and debug. The system’s firmware is based on Analog Devices’ open-source no-OS framework which includes all the tools required for embedded code development and debugging as well as libraries enabling host-side connectivity for system configuration and data transfer over the UART or the 10BASE-T1L interfaces. A PC application with a user-friendly graphical interface is provided to enable easy system configuration and displaying the acquired data in different ways.

Product Detail

The MAX14906 evaluation kit (EV kit) provides a proven design to evaluate the MAX14906, a four-channel industrial digital-output, digital-input device. The EV kit allows the MAX14906 to be configured on a per-channel basis as either a digital output (in High-Side switch or Push-Pull driver configuration) or a Type 1 and 3, or Type 2 digital input. The EV kit monitors the MAX14906 diagnostic information, including open-wire condition, state of the output channels, multiple undervoltage alarms, global and per-channel overtemperature alarms, and multiple fault alarms.

The EV kit must be powered from an external 24V DC power supply that can provide up to 6.4A (max), when all DOI_ output channels are fully loaded with the option of 2x load inrush current.

The MAX14906 EV kit communicates with a graphical user interface (GUI) on a PC through a USB port. The EV kit features an on-board FT2232 controller interfacing to the MAX14906 control signals. Alternatively, an external SPI interface from a microcontroller or FPGA can be used through the 20-pin header (J13).

The MAX14906 EV kit comes with the MAX14906ATM+ installed in a 48-pin, 7mm x 7mm QFN package.
