The ADXRS64x family of low noise, vibration rejecting yaw rate gyroscopes are drop-in performance upgrades to existing designs using the ADXRS62x family.

The ADXRS646 is pin- and package-compatible to the ADXRS62x family and offers a measurement range of ±250°/s, 1 kHz bandwidth, 12°/hr drift with low broadband noise, low g sensitivity of 0.015°/s/g and vibration rectification of 0.0001°/s/g², is ideally suited for high performance navigation and platform stabilization.

The ADXRS646 is a complete angular rate sensor (gyroscope) that uses the Analog Devices, Inc. patented high volume BiMOS surface-micromachining process to make a complete gyro on one chip. An advanced, differential, quad sensor design rejects the influence of linear acceleration and vibration, enabling the ADXRS646 to offer rate sensing in harsh environments where shock and vibration are present.

The output signal, RATEOUT (1B, 2A), is a voltage proportional to angular rate about the axis normal to the top surface of the package. The measurement range is a minimum of ±250°/s. The output is ratiometric with respect to a provided reference supply. Other external capacitors are required for operation.

A temperature output is provided for compensation techniques. Two digital self-test inputs electromechanically excite the sensor to test proper operation of both the sensor and the signal conditioning circuits. The ADXRS646 is available in a 7 mm × 7 mm × 3 mm BGA chip-scale package.

Product Details

The EVAL-ADXRS646Z is a simple breakout board that allows quick evaluation of the performance of the ADXRS646 angular-rate sensor (gyroscope). The ADXRS646 is a very high performance analog-output yaw-rate gyroscope featuring low bias drift of 12°/hr and excellent immunity to vibration and linear acceleration. The small size of the breakout board makes it easy to mount the gyroscope to an existing system without the need for additional hardware and with minimal effect on performance of the system and of the gyroscope. The board comes populated with all required passives, as specified in the User Guide below.

This is an excellent product that is fulfilling (together with a couple of other ADI gyros) an important gap in the industry. Most of the gyro/accelerometer designs aim for inexpensive high volume products, and apparently lack the high performance requirements of industrial applications. On the other hand, the high end inertial sensor segment is often way too expensive for typical mid-volume applications and moreover, seem to be geared towards aviation and similar segments. For industrial applications, especially heavy machinery, where platform control, and hence sensing, is pivotal, sensors with high vibrational rejection is what we would be mostly looking. Obviously, scepticity to vibration will ruin good bias stability and dominate in general the error/estimation budget. So, rather than seeking extreme bias/temp etc. stability, we rather wan't to keep a high short term accuracy, which is corrected via state estimation algorithms on a long term. These sensors hence address a key segment and requirement in certain industrial fields. The pricing vs. performance seems to be pretty close to spot on.

Aircraft
I have use this device for control to attitude of little aircraft. It has a good immunity to noise of vibration and is very simple make a temperature adjust, but Is not simple make a calibration. I don't like the package because is very difficult mount device up tab. Overall i am very happy to this devide.
