SSM2167

Low Voltage Microphone Preamplifier with Variable Compression & Noise Gating

Product Details

The SSM2167 is a complete and flexible solution for conditioning microphone inputs in personal electronics and computer audio systems. It is also excellent for improving vocal clarity in com-munications and public address systems. A low noise voltage controlled amplifier (VCA) provides a gain that is dynamically adjusted by a control loop to maintain a set compression characteristic. The compression ratio is set by a single resistor and can be varied from 1:1 to over 10:1 relative to the fixed rotation point. Signals above the rotation point are limited to prevent overload and to eliminate popping. A downward expander (noise gate) prevents amplification of background noise or hum. This results in optimized signal levels prior to digitization, thereby eliminating the need for additional gain or attenuation in the digital domain. The flexibility of setting the compression ratio and the time constant of the level detector, coupled with two values of rotation point, make the SSM2167 easy to integrate in a wide variety of microphone conditioning applications.

The device is available in a 10-lead MSOP package, and is guaranteed for operation over the extended industrial temperature range of −40°C to +85°C.

The SSM2167 is a remake of the '2165 and allows a resistor to set the downward expansion rather than selecting one of two chips. The loss of the SOIC package in favor of the MSOP is a small consequence of its evolution and the smaller footprint may be useful. For an electric guitar compressor, the unit could have more dynamic range; it spends most of the time in the limiting area and passes through the compression area on the decay of longer notes. It's useful for this application but is probably better tailored for speech where you have a basic on-off situation with a moderate band of levels that fit in the compression region. I had to use 16.9 k for the downward compression resistor to allow adequate sustain and didn't find any of the noise floor problems mentioned in the data sheet for values over 5 k.

Great features, easy to interface mic amp
One of the best products of the market that can be used to cheap but high quality microphone amplifiers. Works great with piezo transducer.

Start-up time is too long, and probably take a few seconds to tens of seconds to be able to work properly. Compression Control is ideal, great sound will not be distorted. Then there is the gain is relatively low, if more than one application is very easy to whistle or unstable. Proposal to increase a 6 ~ 12db output amplifier.

    SSM2167 as a level detector
We applied the conditioner as a level detector to control LEDs blinking connected to uC. The conditioner performs exactly as in the data sheet and it solved, to some extent, filtering problems in our basic voice signal processing project.

    SSM2167 nice package
Perfect for our prototyping requirements. I had no problem fitting this component and it worked within the expected parameters and specifications. Many thanks

This product has great features; however, I'd wish for better control of the noise gate/squelch along with a little better noise floor. Taking into account that I'm new to the device and haven't explored it perhaps as fully as one might, I'm not comfortable being too critical. It's obviously designed for a close talking microphone applications and would work wonderfully there. An impressive device!

    A good product
Easy to work with and a solid performer, the SSM2167 easily functioned with a minimum of support components.
