The AD8479 is a difference amplifier with a very high input common-mode voltage range. The AD8479 is a precision device that allows the user to accurately measure differential signals in the presence of high common-mode voltages up to ±600 V. The AD8479 can replace costly isolation amplifiers in applications that do not require galvanic isolation. The device operates over a ±600 V common-mode voltage range and has inputs that are protected from common-mode or differential mode transients up to ±600 V.

The AD8479 has low offset, low offset drift, low gain error drift, low common-mode rejection drift, and excellent CMRR over a wide frequency range.

The AD8479 is available in a space-saving 8-lead SOIC package. It is operational over the −40°C to +125°C temperature range.

The AD8479R-EBZ is specifically designed to aid in the evaluation of the AD8479, a very high common-mode voltage precision difference amplifier. The evaluation board is a bare board with no components soldered to the board and must be ordered separately.

I did try this component in high voltage/high side current shunt monitor application, single supply. I have to say that it is a quite complicated solution compared to so called state of the art "shunt monitor" such as AD8212. First it needs additional accurate voltage reference, second we still need an additional low voltage difference amplifier in order to use the measure properly.

To test the AD8479 with ac I took an adjustable transformer and connected one wire to GND. Then I connected a shunt in series to a load (resistor) to the other wire and measured the voltage at the shunt both with a commercial Differential Probe (25 MHz) and the AD8479. At least at 50 Hz the AD could completely cope with the differential probe. I'll repeat this test on occasion with higher frequencies but at the moment the result is sufficient for our application.

AC-Performance AD8479

Very good for bipolar currents
This part can be used for bipolar currents (where AD8212 has to be used twice). It can be used directly at high CMV without additional bias resistors.
