The ADF5508 is a GaAs MMIC VCO, packaged in an industry standard 32-lead 5 mm × 5 mm LFCSP package. The ADF5508 utilizes a push-push VCO architecture and outputs both the fundamental and half frequency output. The VCO's phase noise performance of -116 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset allows it to meet the requirements of demanding radio systems like microwave point-to-point links. The divide-by-2 output can be input directly into Analog Devices PLLs such as the ADF4156, ADF4106 or ADF4150HV. The ADF5508 operates off a +5V supply and outputs +16 dBm typical.

Fundamentals of Frequency Synthesis, Part 2: Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS)
This month we conclude our two-part series on frequency synthesis, with an introduction to Direct Digital Synthesis. We will give a basic review of how a direct digital synthesis system works, touching on the inner workings of the DDS engine at a relatively high level. We will also discuss the tradeoffs between PLL and DDS technology as a base choice for frequency synthesis needs.
