The MAX5487/MAX5488/MAX5489 dual, linear-taper, digital potentiometers function as mechanical potentiometers with a simple 3-wire SPI™-compatible digital interface that programs the wipers to any one of 256 tap positions. These digital potentiometers feature a nonvolatile memory (EEPROM) to return the wipers to their previously stored positions upon power-up.

The MAX5487 has an end-to-end resistance of 10kΩ, while the MAX5488 and MAX5489 have resistances of 50kΩ and 100kΩ, respectively. These devices have a low 35ppm/°C end-to-end temperature coefficient, and operate from a single +2.7V to +5.25V supply.

The MAX5487/MAX5488/MAX5489 are available in 16-pin 3mm x 3mm x 0.8mm thin QFN or 14-pin TSSOP packages. Each device is guaranteed over the extended -40°C to +85°C temperature range.

Applications

  • Audio Volume Control
  • LCD Screen Adjustment
  • Low-Drift Programmable Filters
  • Low-Drift Programmable-Gain Amplifiers
  • Mechanical Potentiometer Replacement

Product Detail

The MAX5487PMB1 peripheral module provides the necessary hardware to interface the MAX5487 dual linear-taper digital potentiometer to any system that utilizes Pmod™-compatible expansion ports configurable for SPI communication. These digital potentiometers function like mechanical potentiometers with a simple 3-wire SPI-compatible interface that programs the wipers to any one of 256 tap positions. The terminals of each potentiometer are available at the output connector for attachment to external circuitry.
Refer to the MAX5487/MAX5488/MAX5489 IC data sheet for detailed information regarding operation of the IC.

Product Detail

The MAX5488 evaluation kit (EV kit) is an assembled and tested printed-circuit board (PCB) that demonstrates the functionality of the MAX5488 dual, 256-tap, nonvolatile, SPI-interface, linear-taper digital potentiometer. Windows® 98SE/2000/XP-compatible software provides a handy user interface to exercise the features of the MAX5488.

The tiny 16-pin, 3mm x 3mm, thin QFN-packaged device is socketed, allowing for easy evaluation of the MAX5487 (10kΩ end-to-end resistance), MAX5488 (50kΩ end-to-end resistance), or MAX5489 (100kΩ end-to-end resistance) ICs. To evaluate the MAX5487 or the MAX5489, request a free sample (ETE suffix) along with the MAX5488 EV kit.

  • Data Converter, Interface, Clock, Sensor, and Other Modules Included to Address Many Design Needs
  • Plug in Modules Enable Rapid Hardware Prototyping
  • Proven Software Drivers Reduce Development Time
  • FPGA Configuration Files Included to Simplify Design Effort

Product Detail

Maxim Analog Essentials is a collection of peripheral modules which can plug directly into any FPGA/CPU expansion port which follows the Pmod™ standard established by Digilent, Inc. The collection includes modules containing a wide variety of commonly used analog and mixed signal functions. The modules are supported by software which includes FPGA configuration files for three popular FPGA platforms: Avnet LX-9, Digilent Nexys 3 and Avnet ZEDBoard, as well as example programs to exercise and demonstrate each module. While the example programs demonstrate the module’s functionality, they are well partitioned and documented allowing the core routines to be easily cut and pasted into your own programs. The combination of plug-in simplicity and easy software integration allows for quick migration from idea to working prototype.
