The ADP1660 is a very compact, highly efficient, dual white LED flash driver for high-resolution camera phones that improves picture and video quality in low light environments. The device integrates a programmable 1.5 MHz or 3.0 MHz synchronous inductive boost converter, an I2C-compatible interface, and two 750 mA current sources. The high switching frequency enables the use of a tiny, 1 mm high, low cost, 1 μH power inductor, and the parallel current sources permit LED cathode grounding for thermally enhanced, low EMI, and compact layouts.
The LED driver maximizes efficiency over the entire battery voltage range to maximize the input-power-to-LED-power conversion and minimize battery current draw during flash events.
The LED driver maximizes efficiency over the entire battery voltage range to maximize the input-power-to-LED-power conversion and minimize battery current draw during flash events. A programmable DC battery current limit safely maximizes LED current for all LED VF and battery voltage conditions.
A TxMASK input permits the flash LED currents and battery current to reduce quickly during a power amplifier current burst. The I2C-compatible interface enables the programmability of timers, currents, and status bit readback for operation monitoring and safety control.
ADP1660 comes in a compact 12-ball, 0.5 mm pitch package and operates within specification over the full −40°C to +125°C junction temperature range.
- Camera-enabled cellular phones and smart phones
- Digital still cameras, camcorders, and PDAs

Evaluation Kits (1)
The ADP1650SHIELD-EVALZ/ADP1660SHIELD-EVALZ are designed to allow users to evaluate the features of the ADP1650 1.5 A light emitting diode (LED) flash driver and the ADP1660 dual 750 mA LED flash driver, both with an I2C-compatible interface. This evaluation board demonstrates the functions of the LED flash driver, such as the device information, voltage reference (VREF), general-purpose input and output (GPIO) and timer. In addition, this evaluation board features current settings, output mode, fault information, input controls, and low-battery mode.
This board is controlled using the EVAL-ADICUP3029 or a regular Arduino board to send and receive data from a Windows® PC graphical user interface (GUI) connected to a universal asynchronous receiver and transmitter (UART) and the ADP1650 or the ADP1660 LED flash driver by its I2C-compatible interface.
For full details on the ADP1650 and the ADP1660, see the ADP1650 and the ADP1660 data sheets, which must be consulted with the user guide while working with the ADP1650SHIELDEVALZ/ADP1660SHIELD-EVALZ board.
