Charger Controller Charges Any Size Capacitor
Linear Technology Corporation announces the LT3750, a flyback controller designed to rapidly charge large capacitors to voltages as high as 1,000V. The LT3750 drives an external high current N-Channel MOSFET and can charge a 100µF capacitor to 300V in less than 300ms making it ideal for applications such as professional photoflash systems, RF security, inventory control systems and specialized high voltage power supplies. Its input voltage range of 3V to 24V enables it to operate from a variety of power sources and its patented boundary mode control scheme minimizes transition losses and reduces transformer size. Packaged in a tiny MSOP-10, it provides a very compact high voltage/current capacitor charger solution.
The LT3750's primary-side sensing topology eliminates the need for an external output voltage divider. It uses a single high current N-Channel MOSFET and delivers charging efficiencies above 90%. A low 78mV current sense accurately limits peak switch current while optimizing efficiency. Output voltages can be easily adjusted using the transformer turns ratio and two external resistors. Additional features include a charge pin, offering full control of the LT3750 to the user and a DONE pin that indicates when the capacitor has reached its programmed value and has stopped charging.
