The AD8317 is a demodulating logarithmic amplifier, capable of accurately converting an RF input signal to a corresponding decibel-scaled output. It employs the progressive compression technique over a cascaded amplifier chain, each stage of which is equipped with a detector cell. The device can be used in either measurement or controller modes. The AD8317 maintains accurate log conformance for signals of 1 MHz to 8 GHz and provides useful operation to 10 GHz. The input dynamic range is typically 50 dB (re: 50 Ω) with error less than ±1 dB. The AD8317 has 8 ns/10 ns response time (fall time/rise time) that enables RF burst detection to a pulse rate of beyond 50 MHz. The device provides unprecedented logarithmic intercept stability vs. ambient temperature conditions. A supply of 3.0 V to 5.5 V is required to power the device. Current consumption is typically 22 mA, and it decreases to 200 μA when the device is disabled. 

The AD8317 can be configured to provide a control voltage to a power amplifier or a measurement output from the VOUT pin. Because the output can be used for controller applications, special attention has been paid to minimize wideband noise. In this mode, the setpoint control voltage is applied to the VSET pin.

The feedback loop through an RF amplifier is closed via VOUT, the output of which regulates the output of the amplifier to a magnitude corresponding to VSET. The AD8317 provides 0 V to (VPOS − 0.1 V) output capability at the VOUT pin, suitable for controller applications. As a measurement device, VOUT is externally connected to VSET to produce an output voltage VOUT that is a decreasing linear-in-dB function of the RF input signal amplitude.

The logarithmic slope is −22 mV/dB, determined by the VSET interface. The intercept is 15 dBm (re: 50 Ω, CW input) using the INHI input. These parameters are very stable against supply and temperature variations.

The AD8317 is fabricated on a SiGe bipolar IC process and is available in a 2 mm × 3 mm, 8-lead LFCSP with an operating temperature range of −40°C to +85°C.

    AD8317-EVALZ is a fully populated, 4-layer evaluation board powered by a single supply in the 3.0 V to 5.5 V range. The board can be operated in the Controller or Measurement mode by configuring the feedback resistor as an open or short. Performance in each mode can be optimized using resistive and filtering networks provided on the board. The inputs are configured for single-ended operation and provide a broadband input impedance of 50 Ω. The board also provides options for the user to optimize the output filtering and temperature compensation interface.

    A very useful power detector chip operating over a broad frequency range with useful dynamic range for non-digital signals, the intended use for this project. The chip has an acceptable error across the specified frequency range for the intended task, as per specifications. Easy to implement, thanks to the excellent datasheets.

    Thank you for sending me the devices in such a quick manner. Unfortunately I have not been able to use the device as yet as it is in such a small package. I have made 3 attempts to make a board layout for this device so I can test it in my application but failed on all three attempts as the pads need to be so close together and my etching system cant cope with it. I searched your site but couldn't find an equal device with a more user friendly pin out. I want to use the device to detect the presence of people who will carry a small transmitter that will alert a forklift driver of their presence within a certain range. I am still trying to figure out how I will get one of these chips onto a pcb so I can interface it with the rest of my system for test purposes. Once I get it going I will come back and write a review. The chip has excellent specifications and I am confident it will perform perfectly Kind regards Jose Advanced Forklift Electronics
