What is an STB?

Definition

A "set top box," or STB, is a generic name for an electronic interface between a cable television or satellite signal and video display and recording devices.

Typically a box that can be placed atop the television set (hence the name), it can have many functions, including acting as a tuner, decoding digital or analog television signals, removing encryption, and allowing the purchase of pay-per-view channels.
