Definition

A cathode ray tube (CRT) is a display device which uses an electron beam to energize a phosphorescent coating.

The beam is generated at one end of an evacuated glass tube and controlled by electrostatic and/or electromagnetic fields to strike the coating at the other end, where light emitted when electrons strike the phosphor constitute the display.
