The MAX14916 and MAX14916A are equipped with eight high-side switches with an on-resistance of only 120mΩ (typ), or 250mΩ (max) at 125°C ambient temperature. Each channel is specified to handle up to 1.1A (MAX14916) or 1.5A (MAX14916A) of continuous current. Similarly, two adjacent channels can be driven together to form four 2.4A (MAX14916) or 3A (MAX14916A) switches.

The SPI interface has a built-in chip addressing decoder, allowing communication with up to four MAX14916 or MAX14916A devices utilizing a common SPI chip select (CS).

The SPI interface provides flexibility for global and per-channel configuration and diagnostic, including undervoltage detection, open-wire detection, overload and current limiting reporting, thermal conditions reporting, and more.

Each channel is equipped with open-wire detection that can detect an open-load in both switch on and off states. LED drivers provide indication of per-channel fault, status, and supply undervoltage conditions. Internal active clamps allow for fast turn-off of inductive loads.

Integrated line-to-ground and line-to-line surge protection only requires a single TVS on VDD. Integrated surge protection works for quad and octal configuration.

The MAX14916 and MAX14916A are available in a compact 48-pin 6mm x 6mm QFN package.

Product Detail

This evaluation kit provides a proven design to evaluate the MAX14916 and MAX14916A, eight-channel high-side switch with extended diagnostics. The EV kit includes the MAX14916 evaluation board and a graphical user interface (GUI) that provides communication from a PC to the target device through a USB port and the USB2GPIO# interface board. The USB2GPIO# board should be ordered separately. The MAX14916 EV kit comes with a MAX14916AFM+ in a 48-pin, 6mm x 6mm FC2QFN package, installed as U1. The EV kit can also be used to evaluate the MAX14916AAFM+. The user needs to order the MAX14916AAFM+ samples and replace U1.

The GUI is compatible with Windows® 10 for exercising the features of the MAX14916 IC. The EV kit connects the two adjacent channels of the MAX14916 together for quad high-output current operation. The EV kit software, however, gives access to the full register map, allowing individual control of the eight high-side switches. Refer to the MAX14915 EV kit to evaluate the octal output configuration. The software also retrieves all the diagnostic information from the MAX14916, including open-wire conditions, state of the output channels, multiple undervoltage alarms, global and per-channel overtemperature alarms, and other fault alarms.

The MAX14916 EV kit must be powered from an external +24V power supply and can consume more than 16A when fully loaded. The USB2GPIO# interface board is powered from the USB port.

A single TVS diode on VDD protects all output channels against ±1kV/42Ω IEC 61000-4-5 surge transients.

The MAX14916 EV kit board comes with a MAX14916AFM+ installed in a 48-pin, 6 x 6mm FC2QFN package.

Product Detail

The MAX14916PMB (peripheral module board) provides the hardware to evaluate the MAX14916 Octal 1A / Quad 2A industrial high-side switch with diagnostics. Refer to the MAX14916 IC data sheet for detailed information on the operation of the IC. The module takes advantage of the features in the MAX14916, which allow each channel to independently be toggled on and off and continuously monitored for faults. Note the module provides a subset of the MAX14916 features. For greater flexibility, refer to the MAX14916 evaluation kit.

The MAX14916PMB# has a 12-pin Pmod™-compatible connector for serial peripheral interface (SPI) communication. The peripheral module can be used in various ways; Analog Devices sells low-cost USB2PMB2# and USB2GPIO# adapter boards that use the Munich GUI software for SPI communication through a USB cable. This is not included with this board but is available from Analog Devices or one of its distributors. Alternatively, use any microcontroller or field programmable gate array (FPGA) with a 12-pin Pmodcompatible connector for SPI communication.

The PCB dimension is 62mm long x 22.6mm wide, with the width determined by the size of the DO terminal block.
