PERSONAL SOUND ZONES: INDIVIDUALIZING IN-CABIN AUDIO

Since the first AM receiver was bolted into a dashboard in 1930, in-car audio has followed one unspoken rule: whoever controls the radio controls the in-cabin experience. Everyone else surrenders to the playlist or retreats into headphones and out of the conversation. With the advent of personal sound zone (PSZ) technology, times are finally changing.

By shaping and steering sound to individual seats, PSZ delivers a private listening experience to each occupant. The driver follows navigation prompts while the front passenger has a hands-free phone call or the kids in the back seats watch a movie. Each within their own “sound bubbles” while still being able to talk to each other. One cabin. Multiple experiences. Zero arguments.

But for OEMs, delivering personal sound zones at production scale is far more challenging than it sounds. Creating separate audio experiences for multiple occupants in the same cabin requires sophisticated, real-time algorithms that continuously shape and control sound while minimizing audio spillover between seats. The real breakthrough isn’t demonstrating the technology in a fully loaded concept vehicle—it’s making it work within a standard production architecture without adding high cost, hardware, or complexity.

WHY AUTOMOTIVE AUDIO IS BECOMING AN OEM COMPETITIVE WEAPON

The growing interest in PSZ reflects a broader shift in consumer expectations. As vehicles become increasingly software-defined, consumers are placing greater value on experiences that adapt to individual preferences and needs. Audio is emerging as one of the most visible and impactful ways for automakers to deliver that personalization.

At the same time, premium audio has become an important differentiator for OEMs, not only because of the immediate impact of sound quality on the listener, but also because it serves as a platform for new occupant experiences. Features such as immersive sound, enhanced communications, and individualized listening experiences are increasingly shaping perceptions of vehicle quality and technology leadership.

For automakers, this trend creates an opportunity to capture increased value from this differentiated experience. Consumers are increasingly willing to pay for technology-rich cabin experiences, making audio one of the few vehicle systems that can simultaneously enhance user satisfaction and support premium vehicle positioning.1 In fact, recent industry data illustrates why automakers continue to invest heavily in next-generation audio technologies:

  • More than 55% of vehicles sold as of April 2026 were equipped with premium audio systems.2
  • Premium audio adoption is growing at more than eight times the rate of overall light vehicle production (5-year CAGR of more than 8% versus approximately 1% for light vehicle production).2
  • An ADI analysis of 27 popular vehicle models found that trims featuring premium audio and related upgrades carried an average price premium of approximately $4,800.3

WHY CARE ABOUT AUTOMOTIVE AUDIO?

As vehicles become more software-defined, an OEM’s competitive advantage is shifting from what’s under the hood to individual cabin experiences. The real value lies not in algorithms themselves, but in how they create more personalized, intuitive, and differentiated experiences for every occupant. Consumers don’t buy algorithms; they buy experiences that the algorithms make possible.

A SOFTWARE-FIRST, ARCHITECTURE-AWARE, SHOWROOM-READY SOLUTION

For OEMs, a viable solution to the challenges of PSZ implementation has emerged in the form of a software-first approach—one designed to work within the existing vehicle audio architecture rather than requiring expensive rebuilds. The PSZ algorithm at the heart of this new generation of in-cabin personalization takes advantage of the vehicle’s existing speaker system, including door speakers and subwoofers, alongside speakers in the headrests for optimal sound isolation. There is no need for separate hardware or high-end processors in the trunk, extensive vehicle modifications, or a multi-year hardware development effort.

New highly efficient, automotive-grade digital signal processor (DSP) families can now support the full PSZ workload in a single core, using just a fraction of the available computation resources. Even just a few years ago, this would have required a dedicated processor. Pair that with a low-latency audio network that delivers both audio and power to the speakers, and integration becomes dramatically simpler and more cost-effective.

The strategic value of this approach extends beyond engineering efficiency. PSZ is one of the few personalization technologies that can be demonstrated and experienced firsthand by car buyers at the showroom. A prospective buyer can sit in the passenger seat listening to their favorite music while the driver is sent navigation prompts. Through the audio magic of PSZ, the passenger never hears these navigation prompts. That kind of tangible, demonstrable differentiation is rare. What’s more, because it runs on software layered over existing hardware, it can be introduced as a feature upgrade without requiring the launch of a new vehicle platform. This gives OEMs a way to generate incremental, recurring post-purchase revenue on existing architectures.

ADI LISTN®: ENABLING HYPER-PERSONALIZATION AND PSZS

Recognizing the industry's shift toward hyper-personalization, ADI developed ADI LISTN, a suite of voice and acoustics algorithms designed to help OEMs create more personalized in-cabin experiences. These algorithms cover voice applications such as phone call noise reduction and beamforming, as well as road noise cancellation (RNC), which reduces in-cabin noise. One of LISTN’s newest capabilities, personal sound zones (PSZ), enables automakers to deliver seat-specific audio experiences that give occupants greater privacy, comfort, and control within a shared vehicle environment.

Using advanced software algorithms, PSZ creates individualized listening spaces within the cabin. So, the driver can hear navigation prompts, while passengers enjoy immersive music with high-fidelity audio quality, without being disturbed. The result is a more immersive and personalized experience that aligns with growing consumer expectations for occupant-centric vehicle technology.

Just as importantly, PSZ is designed to work with existing vehicle audio architectures. PSZ seamlessly integrates with ADI’s newest SHARC® audio processing platforms and ADI A2B™ connectivity technology. The ADI A2B Audio Bus can even be used to both connect and power the headrest speakers over a single wire, saving implementation cost. OEMs can introduce differentiated personalization features without extensive hardware redesigns—providing a practical, cost-effective path to delivering the next generation of in-cabin experiences.

PERSONAL SOUND ZONES: ENGINEERING HYPER-PERSONALIZATION ONE SEAT AT A TIME

PSZs are ultimately about much more than audio. They represent a fundamental shift in how vehicles are designed and experienced. As software-defined vehicles continue to evolve, consumers will increasingly expect every aspect of the cabin—from entertainment and communications to comfort and information delivery—to adapt to their individual preferences. The future vehicle will no longer deliver a single experience for everyone inside; instead, it will create personalized experiences for every occupant, simultaneously.

For automakers, this represents more than just another premium audio feature. It is a new opportunity to differentiate, personalize, and create value through software-defined experiences. The vehicles that stand out in the years ahead will not simply offer more features; they will adapt more intelligently to the people inside them.
