Analog Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADI) announced the company has joined the Association of Musical Electronics Industry (AMEI), an organization that standardizes, manages, and promotes the MIDITM standard of musical data communication in Japan. ADI is the organization’s first semiconductor company headquartered outside Japan.

AMEI was established on April 1st, 1996 as an incorporated association whose mission is to support the promotion of musical electronics businesses and their relevant industries. AMEI has been engaged in the musical electronics business in many ways, including production, distribution, product research, information collection and provisioning, designing standards, and promoting their adoption. Even after its transition to a general incorporated association in 2012, AMEI has retained its leading position in the promotion of musical electronics businesses by announcing the development and standardization of the major “MIDI 2.0” update, featuring the protocols expanded from the first MIDI standards.

ADI is a provider of audio solutions for applications in various fields such as automotive, home theater, consumer audio, unified communications, professional-use audio, and PC. ADI’s Automotive Audio Bus (A2B) technology is a high-bandwidth, bi-directional audio bus which allows daisy-chains of multiple microphones or speakers with a single 2-wire UTP cable, which effectively reduces the number of required cables while maintaining the audio quality. ADI A2B is drawing attention as a means to effectively transmit audio data not only in vehicles but also in recording studios and concerts.

At the NAMM Show, an international exhibition of the music industry held in United States in June 2022, the MIDI Association, an international non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of the MIDI standard, announced a new standard called MIDI 2.0 over A2B which uses ADI A2B digital data communication bandwidth. Through its participation in AMEI, ADI will contribute to the establishment and promotion of MIDI 2.0 over A2B in Japan.

“We provide a wide variety of solutions in the audio industry including not only the conventional semiconductor products such as signal processors and amplifiers but also DSP signal processors, algorithm software, and bus technology like ADI A2B. We are excited that A2B, which was developed for the automotive industry originally, is expected to be a breakthrough in the world of music. As the first semiconductor company headquartered outside Japan to be a member of AMEI, we are going to provide technological support for the spread of MIDI 2.0 over A2B,” said Katsufumi Nakamura, Vice President of Japan of Analog Devices.

ADI will exhibit at the 2023 NAMM Show in Anaheim, CA during April 2023.
