According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, approximately one million knee and hip replacement surgeries are performed each year in the U.S. alone.

Those numbers are expected to rise dramatically in the coming years – with hip replacements increasing upwards of 175% between 2005 and 2025, and knee replacements increasing over 650% over that same period, both according to a study presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Typically, knee or hip replacement procedures entail surgeons re-aligning the knee or hip by putting a rod down the knee-cap or hip and manually eyeballing its alignment with the help of mechanical guides.

OrthAlign’s alignment technology solution addresses both knee and hip procedures in a simple, palm-sized, single-use device that is compatible with most current implant systems.

The company’s OrthAlign Plus® and KneeAlign® family of technologies deliver advanced navigation and sensing capabilities from compact devices that seamlessly integrate into the surgeon’s workflow. OrthAlign solutions’ remarkably compact size comes as a result of the company’s innovative use of ADI iSensor® MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) sensing technology.


Rather than incorporating camera-based navigation into their solution – which adds significant expense and size to a surgical navigation system – OrthAlign's design team employs ADI iSensor MEMS IMU (inertial measurement unit) to enable an orthopedic surgeon to determine, within seconds, the center-of-rotation of (in the case of a knee replacement) a patient's femur. As the patient's knee is put through a full sweep of motion, the surgeon relies on the positioning and dynamics captured by the ADI iSensor MEMS IMU to quickly and precisely operate.

ADI worked closely with OrthAlign to provide solutions that would not only enable their design vision, but get to market quicker – and serve surgeons and patients sooner. The iSensor MEMS IMU design team were actively involved during OrthAlign’s development phase, analyzing their data, and providing insights on tuning and interpreting the sensor data, as well as performing additional application specific qualification tests, allowing OrthAlign to focus all their efforts on back-end processing and overall system integration.

The ADI iSensor MEMS IMU designed into the OrthAlign solution provides six-degrees-of-freedom measurement via three accelerometers and three gyroscopes that sense linear motion and angular motion, respectively. The iSensor MEMS IMU is capable of precisely tracking an instrument's motion on all axes, even during demanding operating conditions.

The compact iSensor MEMS IMU device provides access to both calibrated and dynamically compensated sensor data over a standard digital SPI interface, and offers the ability to digitally tune the sensor filtering and processing to adapt to multiple application scenarios.

The availability of precise inertial data over a simple digital interface, out of the box, allowed the OrthAlign design team to save years of development time in bringing this revolutionary product to market.

As a result: not only has OrthAlign enabled surgeons to perform tasks with greater precision and simplicity; not only has OrthAlign garnered praise from customers and the industry alike (including receiving the prestigious 2015 Frost & Sullivan Innovation Award); but tens of thousands of cases have been successfully completed, worldwide, using OrthAlign technology – helping to improve outcomes and benefit lives.
