Dahua Embedded DVRs Get the picture with Blackfin® —
Dahua Technology (Zhejiang Dahua Technology Co., Ltd.) is a leader in the embedded digital video recorder (DVR) business now booming in China. The company's DVRs monitor safety and access in a variety of venues that include banks, retail stores, hospitals, police stations, subway stations, airports -- even the 2008 Olympic Games. For audio/video processing in Dahua's top-of-the-line LB SATA Series DVRs, one processor gets the picture best: Blackfin from Analog Devices.
Dahua selected the Blackfin ADSP-BF561 because it has the digital signal processing performance as well as the optimized algorithms to handle the H.264 processing demands of this application. The LB SATA models offer real-time video display for up to 16 cameras, a maximum of 400/480 (NTSC/PAL) frames per second recording at CIF resolution, and up to 100/120 (NTSC/PAL) fps recording at 4CIF or D1 resolution. According to the company, its LB SATA is the most popular embedded DVR system in China and widely accepted in the security industry worldwide.

The company's R&D team was able to speed time to market by using software that Analog Devices has optimized for Blackfin, notably an H.264 video encoder algorithm that Dahua credits for outstanding video performance.
They were also able to minimize development time, bill-of-materials (BOM) cost, and board size with the help of the integrated system peripherals on Blackfin, including serial ports (SPI and SPORTs), parallel peripheral interface (PPI), universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter (UART), and general-purpose I/O (GPIO).
In fact, the processor meets Dahua's needs so well that the company relies on Blackfin to drive audio/video processing in most of its standalone, embedded DVRs. For more about Dahua security products, please visit the Dahua Web site.
