High Linearity Mixers Enable Designs with High Dynamic Range and Low Noise Requirements

Designing a mixer application that requires high linearity and low noise has always been a challenge. Existing mixer solutions often require external components such as baluns and amplifiers, which add complexity to the design. The recently announced portfolio of mixer products from Analog Devices lessens design complexity and offers best-in-class performance.

For narrow-band applications, Analog Devices has introduced single channel and dual channel mixers covering the 900 MHz and 2 GHz frequency bands. The ADL5355 and ADL5357 single channel passive mixers offer the highest level of integration, including RF and LO balun, LO switch for dual LO frequency applications, LO driver, and integrated IF amplifier. The balun integration enables the RF and LO signals to be driven single-ended, and the integrated IF amplifier provides gain and eliminates the need for an external component. Both the ADL5355 and ADL5357 provide bestin- class input IP3 and noise figure performance resulting in excellent spurious-free dynamic range. These mixers also offer the industry's best noise figure underblocker signal performance. High spurious-free dynamic range and low noise figure under-blocker performance enable the mixer to be used in applications where the receiver will be operating in the presence of large interfering signals. Similarly, the ADL5356 and ADL5358 are dual channel passive mixers that offer high levels of integration while maintaining excellent input IP3 and noise figure performance.

RF Mixers

For applications where high conversion gain is not required, the ADL5365 and ADL5367 single channel passive mixers offer the lowest conversion loss of –7 dB while providing an industry-leading input IP3 of 31 dBm and a low noise figure of 7.1 dB. By removing the integrated IF amplifier, the ADL5365 and ADL5367 can be used in up- or downconversion.

The passive single and dual channel mixers, designed to operate over a 3.3 V to 5 V supply voltage range, are manufactured on an advanced SiGe bipolar process and provide 2000 V HBM ESD protection, thereby simplifying handling procedures as compared to sensitive GaAs mixers.

For wideband mixer applications, Analog Devices recently introduced the ADL5801 and ADL5802 wideband active mixers offering the widest available operating frequency from 10 MHz to 6000 MHz. Both mixers offer a conversion gain of 1.5 dB by reducing the need for an additional IF amplifier. These active mixers provide best-in-class noise figure under-blocker signal and spurious-free dynamic range. The mixers also include a feature that allows the power consumption to be optimized based on the input signal level and linearity/ noise figure requirements. Unique to the ADL5801 is an integrated power detector that enables the device to automatically optimize noise figure and input IP3. Evaluation boards are available to allow users to configure and test the device.
