The ADF4002 frequency synthesizer is used to implement local oscillators in the up-conversion and down-conversion sections of wireless receivers and transmitters. It consists of a low-noise digital phase frequency detector (PFD), a precision charge pump, a programmable reference divider and programmable N divider. The 14-bit reference counter (R counter), allows selectable REFIN frequencies at the PFD input.

A complete phase-locked loop (PLL) can be implemented if the synthesizer is used with an external loop filter and voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). In addition, by programming R & N to 1, the part can be used as a stand alone PFD and charge pump.

The ADF4002-EP supports defense and aerospace applications (AQEC standard).

Product Details

The Evaluation board for the ADF4002 contains a SDP connection and software allowing the ADF4002 to be controlled from a SDP board.

This evaluation board requires an SDP Controller board for connection to the PC. The SDP controller board connects to the PC via USB 2.0. The evaluation board will connect to the SDP controller board. The evaluation board cannot be connected directly to the PC. The evaluation software running on the PC will communicate through the SDP Controller board, to the evaluation board. The SDP Controller board is a separate list item in the ordering guide below (EVAL-SDP-CS1Z). If you have not previously purchased an SDP Controller board, please do so to ensure a full evaluation setup.

This ADF4002 prototype aim was to replace an old ECL PLL programmable dividers chain. With a small mcu to translate the parallel input to spi for the ADF4002 this gives perfect results with improvement on phase noise and power supply current.

This is the first ADI PLL I have used, and found it surprisingly easy to use. I started with the ADISimPLL tool, and had doubts about the likelihood of success right out of the box. There was the need to quickly go through the datasheet in order to setup the registers correctly, but to my surprise the whole thing worked at first-go. It's a pretty powerful little device and it only needs 4 instructions to do its job.

Simple, versatile, and easy to use

The ADF4002. A flexible low noise VHF PLL Synthesizer
Disregarding cost, etc. the Analog Devices ADF4002 conventional PLL synthesizer offers low phase noise, high flexibility and ease of implementation both from a circuit design and programming aspect. It's frequency input of up to 400MHz offers good VHF and low UHF operation making it suitable for receiver and transmitter subsystem design in the VHF/UHF range. Pairing the ADF4002 with the selection of components for mixers, low noise amplifiers, data converters, and IF subsystems, also from Analog Devices, will produce a complete solution for high performance communications equipment throughout the VHF spectrum. The author's personal liking is the ease of which the component (ADF4002) can be to design with. Not having to "fuss about" with strange behavior and/or constraints is good.
