The AD5290 is one of the few high voltage, high performance, and compact digital potentiometers2, 3 in the market at present. This device can be used as a programmable resistor or resistor divider. The AD5290 performs the same electronic adjustment function as mechanical potentiometers, variable resistors, and trimmers, with enhanced resolution, solid-state reliability, and superior temperature stability.

With digital rather than manual control, the AD5290 provides layout flexibility and allows closed-loop dynamic controllability.

The AD5290 is available in MSOP-10 package and has 10 kΩ, 50 kΩ, and 100 kΩ options. All parts are guaranteed to operate over the –40°C to +125°C extended automotive temperature range.

We use this digipot for MIDI controlled true analog devices. It is suitable for professional audio equipment because it has wide voltage operating range and very good noise parameters. The communication protocol is very simple and easy to implement. For custom-made audio equipment it would be better in a larger pagkage. Thanks ADI for the samples. I use this part in a digital audio fader application. The operation is very reliable and consistent. Great that it works over such a wide voltage range which makes it perfect for audio. There are 2 improvements I would like to see though: 1) Reduce the digital crosstalk. I have customers complaining about this. The only workaround is to talk to the device at ultrasonic (20kHz) frequencies but this isn't always possible or practical in the application. 2) Reduce the wiper resistance at the bottom and top positions. This is crucial in audio applications which require -80dB or better sound cutoff. This part as well as most Analog Devices digital potentiometers only goes down to about -45dB or so. The only workaround I've been able to find is using an analog switch to short the wiper to the bottom and top wiper positions when the endpoints are reached.
