Optical Networking
Converting signals back-and-forth from the electronic to the optical domain at the extremely high data rates demanded by present-day communications offers challenging component design problems. Laser diode drivers at one end and transimpedance amplifiers at the other end can handle data rates in the 10 GB/s region. Clock recovery and data retiming circuits are needed to clean up the received signals to allow efficient data acquisition or re-transmission.
