New CPU Power Controllers Optimized for Next Generation Desktop, Notebook and Gaming Processors

Analog Devices introduces several new synchronous buck power controllers that leverage proprietary EPWM and Flex-Mode™ architecture technologies. These new patented architectures address the growing power demand in today's more advanced computers and gaming consoles by dramatically reducing the number of on-board capacitors. This efficiency enables designers to reduce typical board space by as much as 30%, translating into a cost saving of up to 15% over other solutions.

The ADP3208/ADP3209/ADP3192/ADP3193 are optimized for converting the 12 V main supply into the core output voltages required by high performance processors. In doing so, they read a 5-bit to 8-bit VID code directly from the processor. The phase relationship of the output signals can be programmed to provide 1 to 4 phase operation, allowing for the construction of up to four complementary buckswitching stages. These devices also provide accurate and reliable short-circuit protection and adjustable current limiting.

High Efficiency Controller IC for Switch Mode Li-Ion Battery Chargers

The ADP3808 is a complete lithium ion (Li-Ion) battery charging controller for three- or four-cell battery packs. The device combines accurate final battery charge voltage control with constant current control to simplify the implementation of constant-current, constant-voltage (CCCV) chargers.

The final battery charge voltage is programmable between 4.0 V to 4.5 V per cell, allowing the charging of various cell types. The charge current is programmable over a wide range—from trickle charging to full charging. The system current sense amplifier includes an ac adapter detection output to signal that the adapter is connected. The bootstrapped synchronous driver controls two N-channel MOSFET transistors for high efficiency charging at a low system cost.

The ADP3808 is specified over the extended commercial temperature range of 0°C to 100°C and is available in a small 24-lead LFCSP package.
